Tomorrow is the first day of school for me. It is also Freshman Orientation for Andrew. The two of us decided to relax a little bit at one of our favorite plStack of Library Booksaces, Books-a-Million. And, to make it even more special, today is National Book Lovers Day. I ordered coffee and ate a piece of chocolate. Andrew ordered chocolate milk and ate a chocolate crisp frog (Harry Potter). I read the Book Page magazine, and he read his new Godzilla comic book. Before we went home, we read over some important information he will need for tomorrow’s orientation.

I’m currently reading The Fringe Hours: Making Time for You by Jessica N. Turner. I’m trying to learn how to practice self-care without feeling guilty about taking time for myself. I’ll keep you posted throughout the year on how I’m doing. I have made a promise to myself to NOT be a workaholic this school year.

Well, dear readers, while our time together is over, the day is not. Therefore, pick up a good book, find a relaxing spot, and READ. Happiness!

Another month has come and gone. I’m in awe with how fast the time is passing. Today is 01 August. My youngest son’s birthday is today, and he is officially 12 years old. The new school year starts in 12 days with my return to the classroom. And, this month my hubby and I celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. Lots to celebrate this month.

In July, I posted the books I planned to read throughout the month. I was a bit ambitious by choosing four books, one of which was 642 pages. I finished two of the four books (Crispin and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry) and read half of The Historian. I am still working through Practicing the Power of Now. Therefore, I have not chosen a nonfiction selection for August. I will continue reading The Historian and will add two more selections.

I absolutely love Neil Gaiman. I read a book by him (Coraline) while working as a librarian several years ago. Then I read The Graveyard Book which I had purchased at Andrew’s school’s annual book fair. Recently, I discovered he writes graphic novels and is a big deal in the comic book world. He writes adult fiction, as well. For my adult fiction selection this month, I’ve chosen his newest novel, The Ocean at The End of The Lane. Returning to his childhood home to attend a funeral, a middle-aged man takes a walk down memory lane and rediscovers the magic and darkness from when he was a small boy.

The children’s literature selection is another summer reading book chosen for grades 5th-8th. I read this book earlier this year, and want to reread it since I will be incorporating it in my classroom throughout the school year.  August is a ten-year-old boy who up until now has been home schooled because of a facial deformity. He enters Beecher Prep as a 5th grader and soon experiences what it means to be different. This novel is a wonderful tool for teaching tolerance and acceptance.

Time for me to sign off. I have a doctor’s appointment. Of course, I will be taking The Historian along with me. Hope you find time to read something terrific this month. Happiness!

What does Vlad the Impaler, a peasant boy, an African-American family in the Deep South, and spiritual enlightenment have in common? ME. They all appear in the books I’ve selected to read throughout the month of July.  Each month I want to read at least three books from the categories I include on my Reading List 2013: adult fiction, adult nonfiction, and children’s literature. Not all of the books I will be reading each month will come directly off my reading list.

The adult fiction selection is a 642 page debut novel about one woman’s search to uncover the truth about Vlad the Impaler and Dracula; and through that discovery a secret is revealed from her own past.

The Historian by ElizabethKostova

The Historian

There are two choices this month for the children’s literature selection. Both books are required summer reading for 7th/8th graders at the school I’ll be teaching Junior High English this upcoming school year.  They are both historical fiction. The first one takes place in fourteenth-century medieval England. Crispin is a thirteen-year-old peasant boy falsely accused of committing a crime, thus causing him to embark on an incredible  journey of self-discovery.

Crispin: The Cross of Lead by Avi

Avi-The Cross of Lead

The second one takes place during the Depression in the Mississippi Delta. The Logans are an African-American family coping with the struggles associated with that time and place in history. Excellent story! I fell in love with the Logan family many years ago when I taught the novel to a 6th grade Language Arts class.

Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry by Mildred D. Taylor

Roll of Thunder

The adult nonfiction selection is all about practicing how to be PRESENT until it transforms your life. I am a fan of Tolle’s teachings ever since reading A New Earth. Even though I’ve grown by leaps and bounds in this area of my life, I still struggle with being PRESENT and overcoming EGO. This book is a practical guide to living in the NOW, not the past or the future.

Practicing The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle

Practicing Power of Now

These are my reading selections for the month of July. Let me know what you’re reading. Happiness!

I have good news and bad news. IMG_3340The GOOD NEWS: I reached one of my Health & Fitness resolutions which was to run a 5K. On Saturday, 16 March, I ran the Hammond Rotary Shamrock Run. The start and finish were on SLU’s campus. Despite the temps being in the forties, it was a gorgeous sunshiny “perfect for a run” day. I had set three goals for myself: finish the race, run the entire way, and complete in 30 minutes. I accomplished ALL three goals. Actually, I surpassed one goal by finishing the race in 28:55. I’m SUPER proud of myself. My hubby and Comet tagged along to cheer me on throughout the race course.

The BAD NEWS: I have NOT exercised since the race. I could give you my list of excuses, but I won’t. Frankly, I wanted to take a break.  I’ll be back on track Monday, 1 April.

There are three upcoming races I plan to run:

  • Holy Ghost Parish Spirit Run (20 April)
  • Mi5Ke Run (11 May)
  • Zombie Run (23 June)

My hubby and I are already registered for the Zombie Run.

I started reading Jackie Warner’s current fitness book called 10 Pounds in 10 Days. I don’t believe I will lose ten pounds in ten days; however, I do believe it will motivate me to finally drop the holiday weight.

Getting back on track can be tough, especially if you are not living in the NOW. I wish I could master living in the NOW. It seems like such a simple concept; however, it’s a very difficult thing to do. I may have to consider rereading A New Earth or The Power of Now again. In the meantime, I’ll have to do my best. Happiness!

Stack of Library Books

Finally, I have completed my list of books (Reading List 2013) I want to read this year. I have chosen 40 titles from three categories: children’s literature, adult fiction, and adult nonfiction. I make no declarations that I will read all of the books I have chosen; however, I am confident I will read a good many of them. My goal on Goodreads is 40 books. I’ve reached 3% of my goal so far since I finished The Hobbit.

I’m currently reading The Last Dickens by Matthew Pearl. It is a murder mystery surrounding the writer Charles Dickens. I’ve enjoyed reading Matthew Pearl since I first discovered him a few years back. His novel The Dante Club was on my oldest son’s high school reading list one summer. I decided to read it, and fell in love with his writing. Since then, I have read The Poe Shadow. And, on Saturday I purchased The Technologists, which is one of the books I have included on my list to read this year.

I would love to know what you, my dear readers, are reading, and if you have a list of books you would like to share with me. I’m always adding books to my “want to read” list. Reading = Happiness!

“Books to the ceiling,
Books to the sky,
My pile of books is a mile high.
How I love them! How I need them!
I’ll have a long beard by the time I read them.”

Happy New Year!

I’m always looking for ways to improve my life by making it better. And, making your life better requires change. Change can be challenging; however, it can also be exhilarating. I’ve decided this year to use the month of January to start some challenges I find interesting, beneficial, and fun. In addition, I plan to use the month to set some goals for the remaining eleven months of the year. Trying to set goals during the holiday season doesn’t work for me because of all the holiday distractions. I, like so many other people, quickly abandon those goals before January ends. I want a clean slate, time, and some enthusiasm to fuel the resolutions to achieve those goals. The number one goal for every area of my life is to be happy, feel good, experience the joy of life itself. According to Danielle LaPorte, it is not so much achieving the goal as it is how you will feel when you actually achieve that goal.

Challenge #1 (8-Week Weight Loss Challenge)

I weighed myself Saturday morning (133 pounds), and not surprisingly, I gained seven pounds. I deserve every pound I gained. I ate the fig cookies, pralines, carrot cake, raspberry chipotle meatballs, dips and chips, fried turkey, etc. I’m grateful it wasn’t more because I definitely indulged this holiday season. Thank goodness I exercised during the holidays. It could have been so much worse. I put seven marbles back in the container for “pounds to go” and plan to get back on track tomorrow morning.

I’m planning to do an 8-Week “Get Healthy” Challenge sponsored by SixSistersStuff.com. They even have the challenge on Facebook. I’ve talked to mon frere, Moonius Maximus, about joining the challenge so we can hold each other accountable. We will start tomorrow Monday 7 January. This challenge will give him some much-needed motivation and will help me lose the weight I gained during the holidays. I like this challenge because it is based on clean eating and exercise, which is the lifestyle I’ve adopted. The site includes a packet which has charts to record your progress. I encourage everyone to take a look (just click on the green titles above, and you will be brought to the links).

Challenge #2 (21 Day Relationship Challenge)

I’m all for trying things to bring more happiness and joy to my life. Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project and Happier at Home, has come up with the 21 Day Relationship Challenge. Basically, you will receive an e-mail each morning for three weeks with a resolution to strengthen your bonds with others. The challenge will begin on Monday, 14 January, so if anyone is interested in participating in this challenge, visit the link above (green) and join.

Challenge #3 (Making Money in Commercials)

I’m taking a workshop this month with my acting coach, Lance E. Nichols. I enjoy acting even though it is extremely challenging for me. The experience is helping me to become fearless.

Challenge #4 (Reading List 2013)

In 2012 I challenged myself to read at least 24 books for the year (2 books per month) from three categories: children’s literature, adult fiction, and adult non-fiction. I created a list of 32 books. Unfortunately, I could not stick to just the books on my list. I deviated a little bit; however, out of the 32 books on my list I read 18 plus 20 more off my list giving me a total of 38 books for the year. There are just TOO many terrific books, and I can’t resist going to the bookstore! Creating the list, as well as joining the Goodreads website helped me read more last year. One of my resolutions every year is to read more. I haven’t put my list together for 2013, yet. I WILL post it this week. It will include titles from last year that I didn’t get to read plus quite a few new titles. I bought two new books from BAM last night which will be included on the list, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and The Technologists by Matthew Pearl.

As you can see, I’m starting 2013 with some energy and enthusiasm. Throughout the month, I will be writing down my goals and resolutions for different areas of my life to implement for the remainder of the year….all of which I will share with you, my dear readers. In the meantime, hoping everyone is enjoying the new year with a grateful and loving attitude. Happiness!

Good Morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to our first meeting of Sugar Addicts of America. My name is Katherine, and I am a sugar addict. Yep, I am addicted to sugar and want to try to break that addiction. Now, let us bow our heads and pray.

Back in April, I picked up a health/diet book by Jackie Warner called This is Why You’re Fat (And How to Get Thin Forever). You don’t have to say it, so I will say it for you. Funky title. Agreed. However, after thumbing through this book several times on my visits to BAM, I decided to purchase it. Jackie Warner is a personal trainer based in Los Angeles. I own her fitness DVD Workout and have exercised with it several times. Although I have not completed the book, I’ve learned so much already.

One of the main components of the book is understanding your body’s chemistry. She writes about how your hormones and organs are affected by the foods and beverages you consume, which determine weight loss/gain. One of the main culprits of weight gain and medical problems attributed by weight gain is SUGAR. Not just the refined sugar that you spoon into a cup of coffee. It includes sugar in all of its disguises: high-fructose corn syrup, dextrose, fructose, sucrose, and the list goes on. Sugar is hidden in so much of the packaged and processed stuff we consume. Even the skim milk I drink has 12 grams of sugar per cup.

I will not pretend for one minute that the information I’m reading from this book is all brand new to me; however, I will admit that it has opened my eyes about how much sugar is being put into our food and how much sugar I’m consuming on a daily basis, as well as the negative effects it is having on my body. All my other heath/diet books, as well as my nutritionist, recommends skim milk. It’s suppose to be healthy. It is healthier than whole milk, but it still contains too much sugar.

So, my plan is to finish the book. It is full of menus of the right things to eat, as well as circuit training routines. The book does state that you are allowed to eat two treat meals in a one week period. For example, you eat clean from Monday through Friday, and then can enjoy two treats during the weekend. This does not mean unhealthy eating all day on Saturday and Sunday. You may want to have a cheeseburger for lunch on Saturday, and a slice of cake at your friend’s party on Sunday. It takes planning, and planning takes time. You have to make the time to be healthy. And, being healthy doesn’t mean you have to be skinny. It means eating clean and being active. It means making good choices when fueling your body.

I’m giving myself until June 30th to finish the book, throw out the bad foods in my house, buy the good foods, and get familiar with the fitness routines. Come July 1st, I’m going into rehab mode to kick this sugar addiction and to drop this unhealthy weight I’ve been carrying around for the last few years.

I LOVE horror movies. I grew up watching Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Blob, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, as well as all the classic monster movies. My favorite cartoon as a kid was Scooby-Doo. He and his gang were always solving mysteries involving ghosts, monsters, and curses. Vampires were the most fascinating to me. They never aged, could change into animals, had hypnotizing abilities, wore the best clothes, and lived a lavish lifestyle. Of course, they did have some limitations…at least the vampires in films and literature from my youth. Now, they sparkle in the sun and feed mainly on animals or get their blood from a blood bank.

While vampires still hold some allure for me, I have become somewhat obsessed with zombies since the premiere of the AMC television show The Walking Dead. Based on a comic book, the premise of the show is about a group of people surviving a zombie apocalypse. The Walking Dead has made the zombie quite popular.  Well, The Walking Dead doesn’t get all the credit. Zombies have been around for quite awhile. The show is just keeping them in the limelight for right now.

Since I have been exploring the zombie culture, I have discovered there is a Zombie Research Society, a 5K adventure race with zombies, zombie walks in various places (New Orleans included), a film being made locally, a Facebook event page for a Zombie Apocalypse, as well as a month devoted to Zombie Awareness.

Yes, MAY is Zombie Awareness Month. And, I’ve decided to devote my leisure time this entire month becoming more aware of the ZOMBIE. The zombie books I will be reading this month include:  The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith, and World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks. I have compiled a list of zombie movies ( Zombie Movies 2012) to watch throughout the month. My list doesn’t even scratch the surface when it comes to zombie movies. Netflix has 55 pages designated to zombies. Who knew? My list consists of movies that were suggested by Rob Zombie (musician and horror filmmaker) and some zombie film sites. If funds are available by the end of the month and my brains are still intact, I may just have to throw a party to celebrate my new-found awareness of the Zombie.

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains.” ~ Seth Grahame-Smith, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Happiness is receiving a gift card to one of my favorite places to shop. I received my “happy” on Friday from the 2nd grade class I am teaching at HGS. My wonderful students gave me a $40.00 gift card to Books-A-Million for Teacher’s Appreciation Week. I decided to maximize my book bucks by shopping on-line where the prices are cheaper and shipping is free.  I also had a $10.00 on-line coupon. Woo-Hoo! This bookaholic ended up ordering three new hardcover books and one paperback for $8.59. What a deal!

My purchase includes:  The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg, The Chronicles of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg (14 authors constribute their stories),  Inheritance by Christopher Paolini, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest by Stieg Larrson.

Oh, Happy Day!

While looking around Pinterest this morning, I discovered a virtual bookshelf on a teacher’s blog called Shelfari. Immediately, I wanted one for my blog.  Unfortunately, after creating my Shelfari account, I realized I had no way of displaying it on MY blog. I could not figure out which widget would display it, or if I even have a widget with that capability. It was driving me crazy that I could not figure out how to add this to my blog. I WANTED a virtual bookshelf. I continued searching through my different widget options, and  finally discovered a similar widget called Goodreads.

Goodreads is an on-line site for readers. It shows what you are currently reading, what you have read, book recommendations, and so much more. I have installed the Goodreads widget to my blog. It is currently displaying the books I have read since starting my Reading Challenge. Check it out!

I love making new discoveries because they really make me happy.

A discovery is said to be an accident meeting a prepared mind.
