A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to think about different areas of my life (health & fitness, home, acting, family, finances) and wrote down a few goals I’d like to work on in each of these areas this year and beyond. One would think after losing weight, exercising on a regular basis, and eating clean 90% of the time there wouldn’t be a need for more health and fitness goals. This couldn’t be further from the truth for me. While I like routine, I also like variety.  And, I like challenges. My challenge has been to drop the 7 pounds I gained from the Christmas holidays. Unfortunately, I haven’t been too successful. Not sure exactly why. However, I have my suspicions it has something to do with the weather and getting dark early. Daylight savings time is just around the corner (10 March), and spring isn’t far behind. I’m hoping the combination of warmer weather and longer daylight hours is the answer to shedding these unwanted pounds.

This is my list of Health & Fitness resolutions:

  • Continue to exercise on a regular basis (shoot for 5 days a week).
  • Try new classes/exercises to challenge muscles and keep it fresh.
  • Run a 5K.
  • Run a 5K with zombies in it. (June 2013)
  • Continue to eat clean, and shoot for 95% of the time. More veggies and 8 glasses a water each day.
  • Try new recipes even though cooking is not my favorite thing (shoot for 3 new recipes a month).
  • Make the time to prep food/plan meals ahead of time (shoot for 3 days a week).
  • When the weather gets nicer, walk my dog (Comet aka Tooty) on a more regular basis (shoot for 4 times a week).

On Saturday, I registered for the Hammond Rotary 5K Shamrock Run being held on the SLU Campus on Saturday, 16 March. Of course, my main goal is to finish; however, I want to run the entire race in 30 minutes. Pray for good weather.

Healthier Lifestyle 8-Week Challenge Update

My week #7 total was 169 points. I earned 169 points for making healthy choices and 0 points for weight loss. Our points for not eating after 9PM was doubled this week. According to my scale Monday, I gained 3.5 pounds (REALLY!) which makes my weight 135.5 pounds. I weighed myself again this morning with 133 pounds. Still a pound gain! I want to kick that scale to the curb. Moonius Maximus earned 105 points. He earned 100 for making healthy choices and 5 points for maintaining his weight loss. His weight is still 184 pounds. We have one more week to complete this challenge. Moonius and I will NOT give up. We are determined to finish this challenge with a positive attitude. Happiness!

Good Morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to our first meeting of Sugar Addicts of America. My name is Katherine, and I am a sugar addict. Yep, I am addicted to sugar and want to try to break that addiction. Now, let us bow our heads and pray.

Back in April, I picked up a health/diet book by Jackie Warner called This is Why You’re Fat (And How to Get Thin Forever). You don’t have to say it, so I will say it for you. Funky title. Agreed. However, after thumbing through this book several times on my visits to BAM, I decided to purchase it. Jackie Warner is a personal trainer based in Los Angeles. I own her fitness DVD Workout and have exercised with it several times. Although I have not completed the book, I’ve learned so much already.

One of the main components of the book is understanding your body’s chemistry. She writes about how your hormones and organs are affected by the foods and beverages you consume, which determine weight loss/gain. One of the main culprits of weight gain and medical problems attributed by weight gain is SUGAR. Not just the refined sugar that you spoon into a cup of coffee. It includes sugar in all of its disguises: high-fructose corn syrup, dextrose, fructose, sucrose, and the list goes on. Sugar is hidden in so much of the packaged and processed stuff we consume. Even the skim milk I drink has 12 grams of sugar per cup.

I will not pretend for one minute that the information I’m reading from this book is all brand new to me; however, I will admit that it has opened my eyes about how much sugar is being put into our food and how much sugar I’m consuming on a daily basis, as well as the negative effects it is having on my body. All my other heath/diet books, as well as my nutritionist, recommends skim milk. It’s suppose to be healthy. It is healthier than whole milk, but it still contains too much sugar.

So, my plan is to finish the book. It is full of menus of the right things to eat, as well as circuit training routines. The book does state that you are allowed to eat two treat meals in a one week period. For example, you eat clean from Monday through Friday, and then can enjoy two treats during the weekend. This does not mean unhealthy eating all day on Saturday and Sunday. You may want to have a cheeseburger for lunch on Saturday, and a slice of cake at your friend’s party on Sunday. It takes planning, and planning takes time. You have to make the time to be healthy. And, being healthy doesn’t mean you have to be skinny. It means eating clean and being active. It means making good choices when fueling your body.

I’m giving myself until June 30th to finish the book, throw out the bad foods in my house, buy the good foods, and get familiar with the fitness routines. Come July 1st, I’m going into rehab mode to kick this sugar addiction and to drop this unhealthy weight I’ve been carrying around for the last few years.

My little guy and I like to go to Books-A-Million at least once a month to spend some quality time together. He orders chocolate milk and a box of gummy worms. I order a mocha latte. Generally, I read the monthly BookPage newspaper with reviews and advertisements for the newest books out in the bookstores. My little guy finds something interesting to read, which on many occasions I end up purchasing.  Although on this particular visit, he brought his allowance, was given a 50% coupon by a friend’s mother, and walked out with a brand new hardcover Star Wars Lego Visual Dictionary for $10.79. It is relaxing and fun, and we are spending time together. It is definitely one of my favorite things I like to do with my little guy.

Yesterday afternoon, we went for one of our monthly dates. In the middle display alone, I saw a dozen books I wanted to read.  Thumbing through December’s issue of BookPage, I saw a few more titles I wanted to read.  It dawned on me, as I was sipping my mocha latte, that I wouldn’t be reading any new books until I started reading some of the books I already owned at home. And, those were not going to get read if I did not start making the time to read them.

Reading makes me happy, so I am adding “reading more” as one of my resolutions for my happiness project.  My goal is to read at least two books per month. At first, I was going to put the books in order by month, but decided that may be too stressful. Instead, I just created a list of books, and I have separated them into categories. I love reading children’s literature, so quite a few titles fall in that category. Each month, I’ll decide what to read based on my mood, time constraints, movie releases based on books I’ve chosen, as well as release dates for books not yet published. Yes, even though there are many books on my book shelves I have not read, yet….there are a couple of books that are scheduled to come out this year that I want to read this year.

One day I would love to start a book club. For the time being, I’ll have to put that idea on my Wish List. I’ve included my reading list for your viewing pleasure (click on the link below). I’ll keep you up to date throughout the year on my progress. I hope you decide to do more of the things you love throughout the year.

Happy New Year!

Reading List 2012

The new year is fast approaching.  I’m getting excited because I like new beginnings.  However, before I embark on my litany of new year’s resolutions, I want to take a moment to revisit what worked and didn’t work for me in 2011.

I started January 2011 off with taking an acting class with the actor Lance Nichols, who has a recurring role as Dr. Larry Williams on the HBO television series Treme.  February showed some promise in my pursuit of a new career as a freelancer. I booked my first background acting gig on Treme, worked as an office production assisistant on a Web Reality series, and signed up with a temp agency. I started working a temp job at WYES in March, which I absolutely loved. I love my WYES family! In addition to the WYES job,  April was also my debut as a zombie, another acting class with Lance, and camping with the Cub Scouts at Fountainebleu State Park. May was somber with the death of our guinea pig, Cinnamon, and the end of my temp job at WYES. However, June brought about a callback from an audition I had for Edible Arrangements, directing shifts at WYES for Art Auction, and no surgery on my liver. July was pretty relaxing. Spent a lot of time at home with Andrew, as well as doing things with family and friends. We even fostered a stray dog for two weeks. August was the start of a new school year and my happiness project.  I did NOT have to go back into the classroom. And, I started running again. I subbed at HGS a lot in September and started working another temp job at WYES. October was super busy with subbing at HGS during the day and directing the Showboat Auction at night. I also ran a 5K. November brought Thanksgiving, my evening with Stephen King, and my first speaking role in a short film called Hotcakes. Alas, December….subbed most of the month, celebrated a quiet Christmas with family, and son #1 came home for the holidays. Overall, a busy year, and these were just some of the highlights. I looked into possibilities, took opportunities, and made a few assessments. I NOW know what I don’t want to do;  however, I am still trying to figure out what I want to do, which brings me to a new year.

2012 is my year to shed. Without sounding melodramatic, I believe if I can shed some things from my life, I will be able to focus on what I want to do with the rest of the time I have left on this earth. Below is my list of what I want to shed or get rid of in my life this year:

  • bad habits
  • weight
  • responsibilities
  • stuff
  • debt
  • fear

I figure I should tackle the issues that are holding me back, so I can really maximize my life. Some of the things on my list I will shed naturally, while others will take work. Although I am grateful for my experiences in 2011, I’m excited about the prospects of 2012. Happy New Year!

I’m sitting here having a déjà vu moment, except I’m eating grapes (planned snack…explain later). I’m at the start of a new school year without a job. Sound familiar. Yes, last school year I decided to leave the teaching profession with my family’s blessing to pursue other things. And, I did. I was suppose to blog about my year. And, I didn’t. I was kind of busy going in a few different directions trying to figure out what I wanted to be when I grow up.  However, there is a slightly different plan for this year. I will not be returning to the teaching profession as a full-time teacher; however, I am planning to return to the teaching profession as a substitute teacher. My thinking…it will provide me with a much needed paycheck, while giving me much needed flexibility to continue to pursue other things. One year was not quite enough. I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. This year I will blog more about my year. This year I will arm myself with monthly resolutions in the name of “happiness.” Hopefully, with a more planned approach, I will not flounder as much as I did last year. I have no regrets concerning how I spent my time last year. It gave me a much needed mental break, and I was able to explore different avenues of interest, while being more active in the role of mother. I know what I don’t want for my life, so this year I must find out what I do want for my life. I do want to be happier, and for me I must dust off all the areas of my life and make some much needed improvements.

Last month I read the book The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin, and I am obsessed with doing my very own happiness project. It really is kind of insane considering school is about to start, as well as scouts and working full-time. My resolutions are designed to gain back more control over my life, and provide me happiness at the same time. I also will set some goals throughout the year as I work on these resolutions. Making this public gives me some added motivation to work harder. I need to be held accountable in order to succeed.

Yesterday, I started my own happiness project. I do not have my chart created, yet…plan to do it today. One of these months, I have to tackle TIME MANAGEMENT. Below are my resolutions for August. Now, some resolutions I can do everyday, others are throughout the month. I basically get a gold star for each resolution I keep during the month. Then next month, I have new resolutions PLUS the previous ones. We’ll see how well I do all year. If I can gain some more control over my life, it will ultimately make me happy. These reolutions are all about gaining control and making my life happier in the process. Gretchen Rubin started off her happiness project with Vitality (boost energy) for her first month, so I thought I would do something similiar. It makes sense. The more energy you have, the happier you are and the better equipped you are to tackle other areas of your life that need improvement. I decided to concentrate on health and fitness.

So here goes:

August: Health and Fitness

• Eat Better: In order to do this I have four resolutions.

1) stop mindless snacking throughout the day (if I do have a designated snack, they need to be healthy-fruit/veggies/yogurt, etc. (no M & M’s). Hence, the grapes I was eating earlier during my déjà vu moment.
2) keep a food journal
3) eat more fruits and veggies (fruit is not hard for me, veggies much harder)
4) plan my meals ahead of time

• Exercise: I have three resolutions under this category.

1) Move everyday.
2) Run at least three days per week.
3) Strength Train at least two days per week.

• Drink more water (at least 6 glasses).

• Get up Earlier (no hanging out in the bed unless I’m sick).

• Go to bed ON TIME (no staying up late to read).

Then I have some activities each month to challenge myself (learn something new).

1) Make one NEW recipe per month.
2) Take an Improv class (acting) – two classes in August (last two classes in September).
3) Take a Scene Study class (acting) – three classes in August (16 hours of instruction).

August Goal: Weigh in at 135 on 8/29.

Anyway, as you can see…NO MORE EXCUSES. Pardon me now as I go strength train.
