I hope those of you who are celebrating the holidays had a joyous week. My family started our Christmas festivities the Saturday before Christmas Day with my husband’s side of the family. We celebrated at my mother-in-law’s home. Good food, good company, and good vibes. On Christmas Day, we celebrated at my home. It was a small gathering that included my hubby, Andrew, my Daddy, and my mother-in-law. My mother was in Atlanta visiting my sister and her family, and my oldest son celebrated the day with his girlfriend and her family. Later in the evening after our guests departed, Andrew and I went to my BFF’s home (annual tradition) and hung out with her and her family for a few hours where we enjoyed each other’s company while drinking wine and apple martinis. Unfortunately, my hubby had to work on Thursday which meant he had to retire to bed early, so he wasn’t able to hang out with us this year.

Stella in kitchenIn the midst of this jovial holiday season, we were entertaining an unexpected guest who arrived at our humble abode on Monday evening. A sweet female pooch wandered into my garage as I was closing up for the evening. Since she was making no attempt to leave any time soon and was friendly, I gave her some dog food and water and let her be, figuring she would return from whence she came. Wrong! When Andrew came home later that evening, she was still hanging around. I did some research on Lost Pets of Tangipahoa and found a picture of a lost dog that looked just like my new furry friend. I contacted Lost Pets of Tangipahoa to inquire about the dog on her site which was in fact the same dog. She had been found near the Ponchatoula Wal-Mart the week before, secured for five days, and released when no one came forward to claim her. The finder could not keep her because she had a male dog and this little lady appeared to be in heat.

So, Amanda, the admin for Lost Pets of Tangipahoa, posted her picture again for me, and I agreed to keep her over Christmas. On Tuesday morning, Andrew and I took her to a vet nearby to see if she was chipped, and sadly she was not. Christmas came and went and no owner. As much as I do NOT need another dog and even though Tooty does not like her being in our house, I considered keeping her. I thought over time that Tooty would come around and learn to like her. After all, my German Shepherds, Sophie and Sonic, accepted Tooty when we took him in off the road. Unfortunately, she has one flaw…she does not like cats. That is a deal breaker because we have our beautiful kitty Puar. Needless to say, it has been interesting and a little stressful keeping all the fur babies separated.

Stella with toysOn Thursday and Friday, I contacted local rescue groups to see if they could help me find a place for her. I also reached out to my FB friends and family to spread the word about her situation, hoping for suggestions, guidance, or someone who could take her. If I could not find a good home for her, I was left with no choice but to bring her to the local animal shelter and hope for the best. Sadly, our animal shelter in Tangipahoa Parish is a “limited intake shelter.” I was striking out with some groups (full or no fosters) and receiving no responses at all from others. Finally, I contacted Amanda with Lost Pets to tell her that I was running out of options, and we were going to have to bring her to the shelter by the end of the day on Friday. Amanda contacted Northshore Humane Society to see if they could help. At the same time, Shelly had a possible family that wanted her. The family fell through because they have three cats. Northshore came through with Amanda’s help; however, we would have to wait until Saturday to bring her to the facility.

Stella & AndrewWell, dear reader, the baby girl is still with us. I spoke with Briana at Northshore on Saturday morning, and she asked if we could keep the pooch for a couple more days until they could find a foster to take her. Of course, I said yes. Although every day that she stays with us, we get more attached to her, and she gets more attached to us. On Northshore’s FB page, it appears a foster was finally found yesterday evening, but we have not been directly contacted, yet. I’m hoping we will be contacted tomorrow morning, so we can get her placed in a good home (without cats) where she can receive the love that she deserves.

I have been pretty emotional throughout this whole process. I have a soft spot for animals. Undoubtedly, I am more of a cat person than a dog person; however, this sweet canine has stolen my heart, and I want to do right by her. I’ve learned these past few days that unwanted/abandoned fur babies are an epidemic, and there are not enough people/resources to advocate for them. God bless everyone who does advocate for them. If my circumstances were different, I would keep her in a heartbeat, and I would name her Stella. Happiness!

“People leave imprints on our lives, shaping who we become in much the same way that a symbol is pressed into the page of a book to tell you who it comes from. Dogs, however, leave paw prints on our lives and our souls, which are as unique as fingerprints in every way.” ~ Ashly Lorenzana

Work LIfeHappy Labor Day, dear readers! Today, across the United States, many of us are celebrating Labor Day which is a celebration of American workers and their contributions and achievements. For many folks, this means BBQs, boat rides, and one last visit to the beach.

This year, I chose to celebrate Labor Day all weekend long by relaxing and doing little to no work. And, I do not plan on working too hard today. My behavior this weekend is highly unusual. When I was a classroom teacher, not so long ago, I used this weekend to catch up on school work. In fact, it was the norm for me to spend Labor Day Monday at school. The beginning of the school year is always hectic with tons of paperwork, organizing the classroom, creating emergency sub plans, writing lesson plans, getting into the school routine, etc. I always felt frazzled those first few weeks of school, and Labor Day weekend was a nice way to catch my breath.

According to Gretchen Rubin, the author of The Happiness Project, Labor Day is a great day to reflect upon one’s work life. Back in January of 2017, Rubin launched The Onward Project, a group of podcasts, that go along with Rubin’s message of creating “a happier, heathier, more productive, and more creative” life. Notably, for this Labor Day, Gretchen Rubin created #HappierLaborDay.  With the exception of Radical Candor, the other three podcasts of The Onward Project, Happier with Gretchen Rubin (Episode 184), Happier in Hollywood (Episode 68), and Side Hustle School (Episode 611), are asking questions and sharing their thoughts and insights pertaining to work life. Considering many of us spend a substantial amount of our time at work, you may want to spend a few minutes listening to what these interesting individuals have to share and then take some time to ruminate on your own work life.

One question that I personally reflected upon was “Does your job define you, and should it?” This was a question posed by Liz and Sarah from Happier in Hollywood. For me, my immediate response to the first part of the question is NO. Should it?  For me, the answer again is no. I am not especially passionate about my job. I feel that I am good at my job, and I am grateful for my job and the opportunities and blessings associated with it; however, I am not my job. There is so much more to me (that defines me) than my job and that allows me to do my job. With that being said, I am now pondering “What defines me, and should it?” HA!

For those of you that are not familiar with podcasts, they are auditory gems. I absolutely LOVE them. Podcasts are easily accessible, and you can listen to them through your phone, iPad, or laptop. I listen to several podcasts on my phone while walking, driving, and completing chores. Not a day goes by that I am not listening to one of my favorite podcasts. If you haven’t listened to a podcast before, may I recommend that you try the ones mentioned in this post. I will share others with you in the coming months.

What are you doing for Labor Day, dear reader? And, what defines you? I will be curious to learn how many of you are defined by your job. Happiness!

“The chances you take, the people you meet, the people you love, the faith that you have. That’s what’s going to define you.” ~ Denzel Washington

Dad and KatHappy Father’s Day to all the dads out there who have earned that phenomenal title “father” in some form or sense of the word. A special shout-out goes to my daddy, Milton Walters, who I think is absolutely AWESOME. Yesterday, he, my hubby, and I spent some time celebrating him. Barry and I drove to River Ridge to pick my daddy up and take him to lunch. He chose Bobby Hebert’s restaurant on Veteran’s Blvd in Metairie. We started off with an appetizer, Fried Eggplant Sticks. My daddy and I both ordered the Bobby and Deke’s Mardi Gras Pasta (shrimp, crawfish tails, bell peppers and onions in a creamy alfredo sauce), and Barry ordered the Cajun Cannon Redfish (sautéed redfish topped with crawfish & mushroom cream sauce; served with vegetable du jour). Everyone enjoyed their lunch choices. Next, we visited Cold Stone Creamery for ice cream: Coffee Lovers Only for my daddy; Strawberry Blonde for me; and Peanut Butter Cup Perfection for Barry. YUM! Afterwards, we headed over to PJ’s for coffee and conversation. As a Father’s Day gift to my daddy, Barry made reservations to take him on a tour in July of the PT-305 in New Orleans. That particular boat also holds special meaning to Barry because of his own dad who is no longer with us. Apparently, he did some work related to that type of boat during World War II.

Kat & Barry 2018

@ Superior Grill

The other man in my life that needs some Father’s Day love is Barry. He is the father of my two incredible sons, Andrew and Barry, Jr. and works hard to provide for his family. After we dropped my daddy off at his house yesterday afternoon, Barry and I drove to St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans and checked into the Best Western Plus St. Charles Inn. Surprisingly, we were not celebrating him for Father’s Day. I wanted to see the author Matthew Pearl at Octavia Books last night, so Barry volunteered to take me and suggested we spend the night since we could get a free stay using his travel points. After the event, we went back to the hotel and walked over to Superior Grill which is on the corner next to the hotel. Since we had eaten huge lunches and ice cream earlier with my daddy, we opted for chips and salsa with our margaritas. It was a low-key and relaxed evening. It was a terrific way to end an already amazing day.

This morning, Barry and I woke up early, ate breakfast at the hotel, and traveled back home. He is spending today relaxing. Our boys have decided to get Barry an accessory for his grill which he uses all of the time. In fact, he is grilling burgers this evening for dinner. I hope, dear reader, that those of you who have a father or father figure in your life get to spend some time with him this weekend or in the near future. And, for those of you who have had your father called to his heavenly home, I hope you get to spend some time in remembrance of him. He will always be a part of you, and his memory is worth celebrating. Happiness!

Happy Mother’s Day to me and all the women who assume the role of mother in some fashion. Today was a day splendidly spent with my youngest son. Movie Tickets Andrew and I started out at the movies where we watched A Quiet Place. Both of us enjoyed it even though we were tense the entire time. I treated myself to popcorn and an Icee. YUM! I haven’t had movie popcorn in years.

Next up, we had a late lunch at Courtyard Café in downtown Hammond. This was our first visit, and we were not disappointed. We both ordered crepes. Andrew chose the Perfect Pair (Nutella and bacon). I chose the Strawberry Fields (strawberries, chocolate, and whipped cream). YUM 2! In addition to the delightful crepes, we ordered Dragon’s Breath. It was a bowl of Dragon's Breathpastry puffs with liquid nitrogen. The pastry puffs are about the size of a cheese ball but look and taste like Trix cereal; however, when you bite into them, smoke comes out of your nose and mouth…like it does from a dragon. Terrific experience! YUM 3!

To round out our day together, we stopped at our favorite place…Books-A-Million. We browsed a bit and did very little damage. We left the store with a book for Andrew and a gift card for one of my students who earned over 1,000 points reading Accelerated Reader this year. Once home, I took a siesta. Later this evening, I plan to watch the first part of Little Women on PBS.

The upcoming week for me will be busy. Andrew’s Ring Mass is tomorrow evening. My 8th graders have Honors Day on Wednesday morning and Graduation on Wednesday evening. My team and I will celebrate after the graduation ceremony. I’m taking off Thursday to attend Andrew’s Undergraduate Honors program at STA. On Sunday, I plan to take my momma out, and we will celebrate her for Mother’s Day. While this week will be a whirlwind of activity, I am thankful to be a part of it all.

2018Happy New Year’s Day, dear readers! 2018 is a new year, and I am feeling optimistic about it. RE-ENERGIZE. That is the one-word theme I have chosen for this year. Since this is my last year in my 40s, I want to complete this decade of my life on a high note. I have also decided to attempt another happiness project even though I failed miserably last year. It will look a little differently from the one I’ve done in the past; however, the goal is the same…to increase my happiness. I am looking forward to a new year with new possibilities and opportunities. New Year’s Blessings to you, dear readers. Happiness!

If you could choose a one-word theme for this year, what word would you choose?

Happy 2017, dear readers! I am back for a new year. It has been quite some time since my last blog post. I am planning to strive to do better this year with my writing, as well as in other areas of my life. RENEWAL. That is the one-word theme I have chosen for this year. I have also decided to attempt another happiness project. Years ago after reading The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin, I participated in my own happiness project and had a fabulous year. I am looking forward to a new year with new possibilities and opportunities. New Year’s Blessings to you, dear readers. Happiness!

District Donuts #1

District Donuts

Happy Mother’s Day to all the women who take on the role of mom. I have been blessed and privileged with being the mother of my two sons and the Godmother of my niece Emma. Yesterday, Andrew and I went to the movies to see The Jungle Book (excellent film). He seemed disappointed that he did not have a tangible gift for me. I told him the gift was his time with me. I told both of my children that I did not want any gifts. I just wanted to be able to spend some time with them. I LOVE them tremendously!

District Donuts #2

Sliders

Today, my husband and I took a road trip to Magazine Street in New Orleans. We visited District Donuts. The donuts are HUGE! I ordered a cheeseburger slider and a Rose and Champagne Donut (creme filled with sugared covered rose petals on top). My hubby ordered a pork slider and a donut called the Elvis (glazed donut with maple frosting, bananas, and bacon). Afterwards, we visited my mother and his mother bringing them both a donut and roses. We plan on taking our mothers out for lunch somewhere special later this month.

District Donut #3

Elvis

This evening I will have dinner with my boys. My husband is grilling chicken and stuffed mushrooms. What a perfect way to end my Mother’s Day!

Remembering ALL mothers still with us and those watching over us from heaven. Your love is with us always. Wishing all of you, dear readers, a pleasant week ahead. Happiness!

Happy Valentine’s Day! My hubby and I decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day with an early movie and lunch. What movie did we pick? Not a romantic comedy in the truest sense. No Nicholas Sparks for us! We chose Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. It had romance, comedy, and oodles of zombies. I happen to adore zombies. It was the perfect way to spend the early part of my day. Afterwards, we meandered over to a Japanese restaurant for some sushi.

Zombie[1]Now, I have the rest of the day to chip away at my to-do list while my hubby works on his latest outdoor project. I want to get as much done as possible because tonight I am spending the evening with ZOMBIES. The Walking Dead is back on tonight followed by Talking Dead. Oh, how I have missed Chris Hardwick and my fearless group surviving the zombie apocalypse. I guarantee you there will be no romance or comedy this evening, but there will be plenty of zombies. The group is in peril, and I am anxious that someone I care about in the group is going to die tonight.

Love and hugs to you, dear readers. I hope you were able to spend time with someone you love, or you spent time doing something you love. Happiness!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, my dearest readers! I wish all of you a year of blessings, happiness, and pure joy. I plan to begin a new journey this year, one of innovation which I will share with you shortly. In the meantime, enjoy the first day of your blank slate doing whatever feeds your soul, whether it is reading a book, lounging around in your pajamas, or visiting family and friends for a traditional New Year’s meal of black-eyed peas, cabbage, cornbread, and fried turkey. Happiness!

I woke up this morning feeling like a zombie, which is ironic since I dressed up like one last night. My hubby and I attended a Halloween party (dressed as zombies) at the house of my friend and adopted daughter (Kelsi). Kelsi and I work together from time-to-time at WYES-TV. Recently, I discovered she is twelve days younger than my oldest son. I told her I could be her mother. Since I do not have daughters, Kelsi and I agreed she would be my adopted daughter. This is great because we have lots in common, especially our love for the horror genre. Her house looked fantastic with all the Halloween decorations she and her family have collected over the years. The food was delicious with a scary flair. For example, the deviled eggs had olives that looked like eyeballs, pumpkin spice cookies with candy eyeballs, cupcakes with icing that looked like a blood splat and a knife sticking out of it, and an eclair cake that was disguised as a cemetery. Let’s not forget about the costumed guests who provided wonderful conversations…The Grim Reaper, Witches, Dexter, Power Rangers, Zombies, an Evil Scientist, and many more. Fun night!

Zombie Kat

Zombie Nurse

Since it was forty degrees this morning, I wasn’t too disappointed I had to walk on the treadmill. As luck would have it, Shaun of the Dead (zombie comedy) was on television. My 45-minutes on the treadmill went by rather quickly. Of course, I was not happy with my weekly weigh-in. The scale showed a half pound gain, so my current weight is 131 pounds. In my opinion, this is not an accurate weigh-in because nature had the nerve NOT to call. We’ll just leave it at that.

I must admit that although I ate well this week, I did not do very well with keeping up with my food journal. In general, keeping a food journal is not easy; however, being that I was in a funk about my running situation, I let it slide toward the end of the week. I WILL get my act together starting tomorrow. I only have five more weeks to keep my journal, then it will be a matter of keeping up with food group servings and water intake, as well as my exercise log. My run/walk schedule for this week: Walk 10 minutes, run 6 minutes. Walk 4 minutes, run 6 minutes (repeat twice). I’ll start back tomorrow afternoon. Tonight, I’m watching both The Walking Dead and The Talking Dead, so I do not anticipate getting up at 4AM tomorrow morning.

My upcoming week is going to be unusually busy and exciting. Andrew has two Boy Scout meetings, Halloween is on Wednesday night (trick or treating with Dead Pool), a garage sale on Saturday morning, as well as scrapbooking with my BFF from 3rd grade on Saturday afternoon. And, I start a brand new job on Tuesday. Exciting! I will be the new secretary at St. Margaret Church. Of course, a new job means changes for me and my family. This means new routines and new possibilities. I can’t put into words how happy I am right now.

I hope everyone has a spooktacular week. Happiness!
