MC900432635[1]Don’t forget to set your clocks forward one hour before going to bed tonight. Daylight Saving Time is FINALLY here (rock music plays with confetti spewing everywhere)! I’m just a little excited thinking about everything I plan to accomplish in the upcoming months.

For the past ten days, I have been setting my clock 5 minutes earlier each day so I can get up earlier in the mornings (even weekends). Today, I woke up at 4:30AM. Hopefully, by Saturday (16 March), I’ll be up at 4:00AM. Before it got cold, I was getting up at 4:00AM. This allowed me the time to run/workout before my day got started.  I didn’t have to worry about unexpected stuff happening in the afternoons, getting out of work late, or shutting down because it got dark early interfering with me exercising. Also, the weather is warming up which means I’m able to run outside more often. Soon, I’ll be enjoying my early morning runs again. I can’t wait! I’m already energized just thinking about it.

Mon frere, Moonius Maximus and I completed the Healthier Lifestyle 8-Week Challenge. My week #8 total was 156 points. I earned 156 points for making healthy choices and 0 points for weight loss. Our points for exercise were doubled this week. My final weigh-in was 134 pounds. Moonius Maximus earned 92 points. He earned 92 for making healthy choices and 5 points for maintaining his weight loss. His final weigh-in was 184 pounds. Despite the fact that neither one of us reached our initial weight loss goals (Kat: 125 pounds/Moonius: 175), we are not treating ourselves as failures. Moonius won the challenge of losing the most weight. I won the challenge of earning the most points for healthy choices. Both of us have developed better habits because of the challenge and will continue striving for a healthier lifestyle.

Now, it is time for me to lace up my running shoes and head over to the gym for my run on the treadmill. I have plenty to do today, and I want to start my day off on the right foot, so to speak. Wishing my readers a SUPER weekend. Happiness!

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to think about different areas of my life (health & fitness, home, acting, family, finances) and wrote down a few goals I’d like to work on in each of these areas this year and beyond. One would think after losing weight, exercising on a regular basis, and eating clean 90% of the time there wouldn’t be a need for more health and fitness goals. This couldn’t be further from the truth for me. While I like routine, I also like variety.  And, I like challenges. My challenge has been to drop the 7 pounds I gained from the Christmas holidays. Unfortunately, I haven’t been too successful. Not sure exactly why. However, I have my suspicions it has something to do with the weather and getting dark early. Daylight savings time is just around the corner (10 March), and spring isn’t far behind. I’m hoping the combination of warmer weather and longer daylight hours is the answer to shedding these unwanted pounds.

This is my list of Health & Fitness resolutions:

  • Continue to exercise on a regular basis (shoot for 5 days a week).
  • Try new classes/exercises to challenge muscles and keep it fresh.
  • Run a 5K.
  • Run a 5K with zombies in it. (June 2013)
  • Continue to eat clean, and shoot for 95% of the time. More veggies and 8 glasses a water each day.
  • Try new recipes even though cooking is not my favorite thing (shoot for 3 new recipes a month).
  • Make the time to prep food/plan meals ahead of time (shoot for 3 days a week).
  • When the weather gets nicer, walk my dog (Comet aka Tooty) on a more regular basis (shoot for 4 times a week).

On Saturday, I registered for the Hammond Rotary 5K Shamrock Run being held on the SLU Campus on Saturday, 16 March. Of course, my main goal is to finish; however, I want to run the entire race in 30 minutes. Pray for good weather.

Healthier Lifestyle 8-Week Challenge Update

My week #7 total was 169 points. I earned 169 points for making healthy choices and 0 points for weight loss. Our points for not eating after 9PM was doubled this week. According to my scale Monday, I gained 3.5 pounds (REALLY!) which makes my weight 135.5 pounds. I weighed myself again this morning with 133 pounds. Still a pound gain! I want to kick that scale to the curb. Moonius Maximus earned 105 points. He earned 100 for making healthy choices and 5 points for maintaining his weight loss. His weight is still 184 pounds. We have one more week to complete this challenge. Moonius and I will NOT give up. We are determined to finish this challenge with a positive attitude. Happiness!

I’m on Day 9 of the North Cypress 14-Day Challenge, and I’m actually having a terrific time. This challenge, like the T-Shirt Challenge, has given me the opportunity to try new classes. On the first day of the challenge, I let Shelly talk me into taking a P.U.R.E. class. Intense! The class reminds me of the Insanity DVD program/Jackie Warner’s Power Circuits. You go through a series of stations led by personal trainers. Each station has a different exercise that is performed for about a minute or two depending on the exercise. I left the class thinking “I’ll never take that class again.” WRONG! I took it again  Monday night, as well as last night. On Friday evening I had my training session with a personal trainer. One trainer session is included in the challenge. My trainer worked me hard. My body felt it the next day. After my run on Saturday morning, I took a Barre class with Shelly who had just finished a spin class. The Barre class is a combination of principles of ballet, Pilates, and yoga. It targets the core, hips, thighs, buttocks, and arms. Out of all of the classes I have tried since joining North Cypress, this is my least favorite. In all fairness, I plan on taking the class again; however, it will be on a day or night separate from any other activity and not after a trainer session. Shelly and I both went into that class sore AND after just working out for 45 minutes. Also, Shelly had her trainer session on Friday morning. We’re NUTS! I was stiff, sore, and uncomfortable. It even hurt to sit. I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to walk Sunday morning. I did take Sunday as a rest day. Alas, Shelly and I prevailed, and we are both back at it for another week  of the challenge.

In addition to new classes, I’m trying new foods. I’ve added raw spinach to my salads. I’ve incorporated balsamic vinegar into a few of my meals (salads/pasta). The eating plan calls for Caramel Corn Rice Cakes by Quaker Oats. One rice cake is 0 fat grams; 50 calories, 3g of sugar, and 1g of protein. They are pretty good. The plan calls for spreading some Almond Butter on it; however, I’ve been eating them plain or with peanut butter. I haven’t tried Almond butter, yet. It is something I plan to try very soon.

Healthier Lifestyle 8-Week Challenge Update

My week #6 total was 156 points. I earned 181 points for making healthy choices and 0 points for weight loss. Our points for no sweets or sugary treats were doubled this week. I lost 2.5 pounds (YAY!) which makes my weight 132 pounds; however, I earned 0 points for weight loss because my lowest weight was 131.5 pounds.  Moonius Maximus earned 112 points. He earned 107 for making healthy choices and 5 points for maintaining his weight loss. His weight is still 184 pounds. We have two more weeks to complete this challenge.

Recently, I had the opportunity to write down some goals for different areas of my life. I’m hoping to write a post or two about them soon. Some of the goals are for 2013 while others are something I would like to accomplish in the future. Every day brings opportunity. Sometimes, the opportunities enrich the journey you’re presently on. Sometimes, the opportunities open new doors and lead you in another direction…a direction that may bring you more fulfillment, define your purpose, or  just make your life flow smoothly. Whatever the day brings, be PRESENT so you don’t miss the opportunities.  Happiness!

Commitment Tomorrow, I will start a 14-Day Challenge sponsored by my health club.  The timing is perfect since tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. It will also coincide with the last three weeks of the Healthier Lifestyle 8-Week Challenge I’m doing with Moonius Maximus. The 14-Day Challenge is not much different from the program I was following by Jackie Warner. You need to eat clean and exercise regularly. There are NO treat meals/sugary treats for 14 days. Since the Christmas holidays, I have been abusing sugar again and my weight is slowly creeping back up. Unacceptable! I need to not only make the commitment to lose the holiday weight, but also to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Healthier Lifestyle 8-Week Challenge Update

My week #5 total was 104 points. I earned 104 points for making healthy choices and 0 points for weight loss. Our points to eat three vegetable servings daily were doubled this week. I lost 0 pounds and gained 1.5 pounds which makes my weight 134.5 pounds. No excuses. I’m backsliding and NOT proud of it. Moonius Maximus earned 139 points. He earned 134 for making healthy choices and 5 points for maintaining his weight loss. His weight is still 184 pounds. We have three more weeks to complete this challenge. I MUST be committed these last three weeks. Happiness!

Happy Hump Day! It’s Wednesday, and we are all inching our way closer to the weekend. I’m especially looking forward to this weekend. Why? No special plans; however, it has holidays attached to it. Yes, it’s Mardi Gras time! I get two days off of work next week, and Andrew gets the whole week off. My goal for this weekend….set some resolutions for the remainder of this year. I need a makeover in quite a few areas of my life, so I’m thinking the theme will have something to do with CHANGE.

Healthier Lifestyle 8-Week Challenge Update

My week #4 total was 126 points. I earned 126 points for making healthy choices and 0 points for weight loss. Our points to stop eating before 9pm were doubled this week. I lost 0 pounds and gained 0 pounds which makes my weight still 133 pounds. This is a result of being female. HA! Moonius Maximus earned 98 points. He earned 73 for making healthy choices and 25 points for weight loss. Yes, you read that right. He lost 2 pounds which makes his weight 184 pounds. Despite mon frere’s challenge with exercising, he had a loss this week because of eating better. I’m joining another challenge (14-Day Challenge) at my health club with my BFF since the third grade, Shelly. She talked me into it. It begins on Wednesday, 13 February. What a wonderful way to begin Lent!  My informational meeting is tonight. Of course everything I learn, I will share with YOU, my awesome readers. Happiness!

I’m overwhelmed. When I’m overwhelmed, I cannot focus very well. My life feels chaotic and out of sorts. I’m trying to do too much. And, I have NO routine, NO plan, NO balance. I’m definitely living in the moment, but flying from the seat of my pants. Needless to say, it is Friday night and I’m just posting week #3 of my healthier lifestyle challenge (should have posted Monday). It is 1 February and I have NO resolutions for this year. I would say I need more time; however, it’s not more time that I need, but better use of my time. This weekend, I plan to exercise Saturday/Sunday mornings and attend Mass on Saturday afternoon.  The rest of the weekend, I must use my time to get organized, get focused, get back on track.

Healthier Lifestyle 8-Week Challenge Update

My week #3 total was 147 points. I earned 147 points for making healthy choices and 0 points for weight loss. Our points for drinking 64 ounces of water were doubled this week. I lost 0 pounds and gained 0 pounds which makes my weight still 133 pounds. This is a result of eating too much sugar and having a fast food weekend. Moonius Maximus earned 116 points. He earned 116 for making healthy choices and 0 points for weight loss. He gained 1 pound which makes his weight 186 pounds. Mon frere’s challenge continues to be exercise. My challenge continues to be not eating enough veggies, poor planning, and not resisting the sugary treats left in our kitchen at work. Hopefully, week #4 totals will be better. Moonius believes the challenge is helping him. Despite the fact neither one of us is losing any weight, we are both determined to see this challenge through to the end. We just have to push ourselves a little harder. Happiness!

I DID IT! I completed the Les Mills Group Exercise Challenge at my club and won a new t-shirt. There were four Les Mills classes (Body Flow, Body Pump, Body Combat, and RPM) launching new tracks. The goal was to take at least three of the classes between 21 January through 24 January. Out of the four classes, I was only familiar with Body Pump (strength training). I figured the t-shirt would give me a little extra incentive to try some of the other classes.

T-shirt for completing the Les Mills Challenge

T-shirt for completing the Les Mills Challenge

On Monday I took Body Combat with my BFF from 3rd grade, Shelly, and her husband Kerry. It is sort of like a martial arts/self-defense cardio workout. It was FUN! One of the instructors would shout out crazy things for you to do to your imaginary attacker as you were doing the moves. My favorite: “Kick him in the bladder and send him to the hospital.” HA!

On Tuesday, I took two classes: Body Pump at 5:15 in the morning and RPM at 5:30 in the evening. Shelly and I met for the morning class. Body Pump is a strength training class that works all the major muscle groups by using weight-room exercises likes, squats, presses, lifts, and curls. My favorite new track is for the biceps. Cool music! RPM is a spin class (indoor cycling). Shelly and Kerry took this class with me. And, Shelly was my savior. She brought me a pair of biking shorts. THANK GOODNESS! The seat on a spin bike is NOT the most comfortable seat. Even with the padded bike shorts (felt like I had butt implants), I still had a sore hiney. I truly earned the t-shirt from taking this last class. The only class I haven’t taken is Body Flow. Body Flow is a combination of Tai Chi, Yoga, and Pilates and helps strengthen the core, improves posture and overall flexibility. This would be beneficial for me with my running. I want to take it…just a matter of fitting it into my schedule.

Healthier Lifestyle 8-Week Challenge Update

My week #2 total was 150 points. I earned 150 points for making healthy choices and 0 points for weight loss. Our points for exercise were doubled this week. I lost 0 pounds and gained back 1.5 pounds which makes my weight 133 pounds. This is a result of too many activities involving food and desserts. The key for me is planning and preparation. Moonius Maximus earned 114 points. He earned 109 for making healthy choices and 5 for maintaining his weight loss. He lost 0 pounds which makes his weight 184.9 pounds (rounded to 185 pounds). Mon frere’s challenge seems to be exercise. My challenge is not eating enough veggies and poor planning. Hopefully, week #3 totals will be better. Regardless, neither one of us is going to quit. Every day is an opportunity to start fresh and do better. Happiness!

Mon frere, Moonius Maximus, and I entered an agreement to complete an 8-Week Healthier Lifestyle Challenge inspired by Six Sisters Stuff. We have two friendly competitions at work: 1) We both lose at least eight pounds in eight weeks. 2) We want to see who will earn the most points for making healthier choices. We agreed to do this strictly for fun. It gives him some motivation to exercise and eat better. It allows me to drop my holiday weight.

Our challenge includes seven areas where we can earn points each day for making healthy choices. We mutually agreed to eliminate keeping a food journal. We discussed what we consider sweets/sugary treats. And, we changed our weigh-in to Monday mornings instead of Sunday mornings. We also adjusted our point system a little to allow for points to be earned for any effort given in certain categories. The seven categories include: contacting teammate, drinking water, stop eating before 9pm, eating fruit, eating veggies, no sweets/sugary treats, and exercise. For week #1, we had the potential to earn 170 points plus points from weight loss. You receive ten points per pound lost plus five points for maintaining lowest weight.

My starting weight was 133 pounds. Mon frere’s starting weight was 186.6 pounds.

My week #1 total was 140 points. I earned 120 points for making healthy choices and 20 points for weight loss. I lost 1.5 pounds which makes my weight 131.5 pounds. Moonius Maximus earned 122 points. He earned 101 for making healthy choices and 21 for weight loss. He lost 1.7 pounds which makes his weight 184.9 pounds (rounded to 185 pounds). As you can see, we are both off to a very good start.

I’ve signed up for another challenge at my health club. If I attend at least three Les Mills classes (Body Pump, RPM, Body Flow, Body Combat) next week, I can win a free t-shirt. I’ve only taken Body Pump so it will be fun to try out the other Les Mills classes. I will definitely take a Body Pump class, and I’m thinking about trying Body Combat and RPM. I’ll let you know if I get my t-shirt.

Happy New Year!

I’m always looking for ways to improve my life by making it better. And, making your life better requires change. Change can be challenging; however, it can also be exhilarating. I’ve decided this year to use the month of January to start some challenges I find interesting, beneficial, and fun. In addition, I plan to use the month to set some goals for the remaining eleven months of the year. Trying to set goals during the holiday season doesn’t work for me because of all the holiday distractions. I, like so many other people, quickly abandon those goals before January ends. I want a clean slate, time, and some enthusiasm to fuel the resolutions to achieve those goals. The number one goal for every area of my life is to be happy, feel good, experience the joy of life itself. According to Danielle LaPorte, it is not so much achieving the goal as it is how you will feel when you actually achieve that goal.

Challenge #1 (8-Week Weight Loss Challenge)

I weighed myself Saturday morning (133 pounds), and not surprisingly, I gained seven pounds. I deserve every pound I gained. I ate the fig cookies, pralines, carrot cake, raspberry chipotle meatballs, dips and chips, fried turkey, etc. I’m grateful it wasn’t more because I definitely indulged this holiday season. Thank goodness I exercised during the holidays. It could have been so much worse. I put seven marbles back in the container for “pounds to go” and plan to get back on track tomorrow morning.

I’m planning to do an 8-Week “Get Healthy” Challenge sponsored by SixSistersStuff.com. They even have the challenge on Facebook. I’ve talked to mon frere, Moonius Maximus, about joining the challenge so we can hold each other accountable. We will start tomorrow Monday 7 January. This challenge will give him some much-needed motivation and will help me lose the weight I gained during the holidays. I like this challenge because it is based on clean eating and exercise, which is the lifestyle I’ve adopted. The site includes a packet which has charts to record your progress. I encourage everyone to take a look (just click on the green titles above, and you will be brought to the links).

Challenge #2 (21 Day Relationship Challenge)

I’m all for trying things to bring more happiness and joy to my life. Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project and Happier at Home, has come up with the 21 Day Relationship Challenge. Basically, you will receive an e-mail each morning for three weeks with a resolution to strengthen your bonds with others. The challenge will begin on Monday, 14 January, so if anyone is interested in participating in this challenge, visit the link above (green) and join.

Challenge #3 (Making Money in Commercials)

I’m taking a workshop this month with my acting coach, Lance E. Nichols. I enjoy acting even though it is extremely challenging for me. The experience is helping me to become fearless.

Challenge #4 (Reading List 2013)

In 2012 I challenged myself to read at least 24 books for the year (2 books per month) from three categories: children’s literature, adult fiction, and adult non-fiction. I created a list of 32 books. Unfortunately, I could not stick to just the books on my list. I deviated a little bit; however, out of the 32 books on my list I read 18 plus 20 more off my list giving me a total of 38 books for the year. There are just TOO many terrific books, and I can’t resist going to the bookstore! Creating the list, as well as joining the Goodreads website helped me read more last year. One of my resolutions every year is to read more. I haven’t put my list together for 2013, yet. I WILL post it this week. It will include titles from last year that I didn’t get to read plus quite a few new titles. I bought two new books from BAM last night which will be included on the list, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and The Technologists by Matthew Pearl.

As you can see, I’m starting 2013 with some energy and enthusiasm. Throughout the month, I will be writing down my goals and resolutions for different areas of my life to implement for the remainder of the year….all of which I will share with you, my dear readers. In the meantime, hoping everyone is enjoying the new year with a grateful and loving attitude. Happiness!

A few weeks ago, I received an unexpected gift in the mail. It was a postcard from a local health club offering two free memberships for one month. The offer seemed too good to be true. Curiously, I called the health club to see just what the “catch” was for this unbelievable offer. Surprisingly, there were NO strings attached, NO credit card numbers given, and NO contracts signed. My hubby, Andrew, and I were all given a one month pass for full access to the club. And, they included a pass for Barry, Jr. since he would be home on leave. What an awesome gift! We had been interested in joining this club ever since it opened a few years ago, so this was the perfect way to try it out.

Shortly after we received our passes, we received another unexpected gift in the mail from the health club. This time we received a credit card waiving the enrollment fee, as well as giving us the entire month of January free if we decided we would like to become full-time members of their club. Unlike our first gift, this one had strings attached; however, they weren’t unreasonable. We just had to decide if we wanted to become full-time members by the end of the year. Thankfully, we had a couple of weeks to make that decision.

Since then, Andrew and I have been using the free membership with much enthusiasm. He has been taking a Kid Fit class which is offered four days a week. He absolutely loves the class activities, as well as going to Kid’s Club afterwards. He is making new friends and getting fit at the same time. And, he has even had the opportunity to swim in the heated pool. I have taken a couple of Body Pump classes, run on the treadmill several times (either raining or too cold to run outside), and met with a personal trainer to talk about my fitness goals, learn some core exercises, and learn how to use some of the cardio machines besides the treadmill. I get two more sessions to learn about the weight machines and reevaluate my progress after six weeks. Andrew and I love it! So, we signed up on Sunday to become members for one year. Unfortunately, my hubby did not sign up with us. He hasn’t used his free pass since he received it. He tells me he will attempt to visit the club before his pass expires. The good news is he can join if he decides he loves it as much as Andrew and I do.

What a wonderful way for my family and I to end 2012 and begin the new year! And, what a terrific way for me to continue improving the health and fitness area of my life. However, I must confess I’ve allowed myself to be overly indulgent this Christmas season, somewhat lax on my exercise schedule, and have eaten more sugar than veggies lately. I’m WEAK when it comes to all the goodies you receive during the Christmas holidays! The silver lining….all the bad stuff will be out of my house and out of the church office by the end of this week. The dust will settle, rather the needle on the scale will swivel uncontrollably for a moment adjusting to my slight weight gain, and I WILL vow to redeem myself and get back on track. However, for the time being I cannot and will not get on that damn scale.

This has been a terrific year for me and my family. My hubby and I both got new jobs, we are all in good health, and we receive so much love and joy from our family and friends. We have been blessed in many, many ways. And while we did have to say good-bye to Ming, we are grateful and celebrate the nineteen years she was a part of our family. We continue to cherish those who are so special to us and look forward to a new year of possibilities. And, let me not forget my dear readers. YOU ARE AWESOME! Thank you for your support and encouragement. Wishing you much love, joy, and happiness! ~ Kat
