On Friday, November 1st, I took the stage for the very first time as Mitch Mahoney in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. My friend Tina sent me a text later that evening and asked me, “How did your first performance feel? Empowering? Awesome?”

I responded the next morning (since I was already in bed when she sent the text), “Without sounding dramatic, my first performance on the stage was exhilarating! Being a part of this cast has definitely been a dream come true. If there is such a thing as an actor’s high, I was as high as a kite last night. I cannot wait to do it again tonight. I’m still giddy this morning. Thanks for being one of my biggest cheerleaders. Love ya!”

And, I DID do it again last night. And, I get to do it again four more times this month. I’m having a blast! I fully expected to be a bundle of nerves on opening night, and shockingly, I was not really nervous on opening night or last night. I couldn’t wait to get out on the stage and entertain the audience. There is nothing quite like performing for an audience. We sold out opening night and had a good number of guests last night; however, both crowds brought the energy we needed to give it our all. I am proud of our cast and the musicians. Did I mention that we have live music for the show? The music is amazing! I am extremely grateful to everyone who has attended so far, including my friends and former students from HGCS. Our next show is on Friday, November 8th. Of course, I can’t wait! Undoubtedly, it is going to feel a bit strange not going to rehearsal in the evenings this week.

In Other News:

  • I’m flying to Atlanta on Wednesday of this week. My niece Emma, who is also my godchild, asked me to be her Confirmation sponsor. What an honor! It will be a quick trip, and I’ll be back home by Thursday evening.
  • NaNoWriMo started on Friday, November 1st. I have not written one word of my novel, yet. The plan is to start writing today. I will have to adjust my word count per day to reach my 50,000 words by the end of the month.
  • Today, my hubby and I are driving to the WWII Museum in New Orleans to see the play, Higgins: The Man, the Boat, the War. It is a gorgeous day today, so the drive to the city will be pleasant.
  • As for my weight loss goal, I am down another 2 pounds which puts me at a total loss of 11 pounds since September 2nd. I have 8 more pounds to lose by the end of 2019 to reach my goal.

November has certainly started off with a bang for me, dear reader. Much more is to come as the month unfolds. I am amazed that there are only two months left in 2019. I still have a few items to cross off of my 19 for 2019 list. I have a feeling a couple of those items will be added to my 2020 list. Life is unpredictable, so it is best to go with the flow and to adjust as needed. I’m really not a go-with-the-flow kind of gal by nature. I’m more of a planner and prefer structure; however, life doesn’t always accommodate me, so I’m slowly learning to adapt. While the unpredictability of life can be stressful, it can also be invigorating. How do you handle life and all its unpredictability, dear reader? Happiness!

This coming week is the last week before rolling into TECH WEEK. While I have never experienced tech week as an actor, as a drama mama during Andrew’s tech weeks, I know it can be intense for all involved. Yesterday afternoon, I attended rehearsal to work solely on my monologue and solo for the play. I’m enjoying the process of developing my character and exploring different choices as Mitch. It’s an exciting feeling!

So, I plan to bask in the calm before the storm this week. Hydration and eating clean are top priorities. Getting an ample amount of sleep and keeping stress to a minimum are key. This week is a season of self-care. Next week is a season of sacrifice. Both are temporary but necessary for an incredible end result. Jenna Fischer (Pam) and Angela Kinsey (Angela), who happen to be BFFs,  take you on an episode-by-episode journey that breaks down each episode and gives you behind the scenes information on the much loved tv show.

Kombucha 2My quest for Big Easy Kombucha is still in full force. I have only been able to find it at my local Wal-Marts. They have added two more flavors, Jammin’ Ginger infused with ginger, Meyer lemon, and hibiscus and Melon Magic infused with cantaloupe, honeydew, and watermelon. I usually enjoy a cup of Kombucha with my dinner. Apparently, Big Easy Bucha has a tasting room in New Orleans where you can try Kombucha on draft. Road trip!

I am down another pound which puts me at a total loss of 9 pounds since September 2nd. Slow and steady wins the race. I am ten pounds away from meeting my weight loss goal.

Life is good, dear reader. Better yet, life is wonderful! I am living a blessed filled life. What are your plans for the remainder of the weekend? My hubby and I are going to see Zombieland: Double Tap in a couple of hours. We watched the first one last night to refresh our memories. Good stuff! After Andrew gets off work (yes, work…an official employee at BAM), we plan to meet him for dinner at SLU. The cafeteria in the Student Union is amazing. Happiness!

PandemoniumMy life is pandemonium right now, and I’m surprisingly happier because of it. I have a bunch of irons in the fire. Some are way more enjoyable than others. I’m working on making my dreams a reality. It is awesome to set goals; however, I must remind myself that the satisfaction of achieving those goals comes from the journey or the process in fulfilling them.

I’ve started rehearsing for the 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee show. I’m taking an Acting for Film and Television Workshop on Saturdays. I’m working full-time as an instructional coach at Holy Ghost Catholic School. I’m blogging. And, I’m trying to lose 19 pounds by December 31st, all while taking care of my fur babies and meeting the other demands of my personal life. No two days are alike which makes trying to successfully balance it all interesting at times.

Last week was challenging because I had a work commitment every day (except Friday) after school. Needless to say, I did not get in any extra exercise. I had to choose between exercise and rest. I chose rest, so that I could be my best during rehearsal and at Saturday’s class. Thankfully, eating clean and being active at work is helping to keep my weight in check. I am currently in the reemergence period of The Clean 20 program which will last another two weeks. At the end of that period, I will post an update. I do want to share that I am down another 1/2 pound which puts me at a total loss of 7.5 pounds since September 2nd. Woot-Woot!

In Other News:
Four Tendencies#8 Read one book a month for self-improvement. This month I read The Four Tendencies: The Indispensable Personality Profiles That Reveal How to Make Your Life Better (and Other People’s Lives Better, Too) by Gretchen Rubin. I’ve always been fascinated by personality assessments and learning how personality influences decision making, job performance, etc. While those assessments share some specific aspect of human nature, Rubin’s framework is based solely on meeting inner and outer expectations and how people respond to them when making decisions, reaching goals, and handling relationships. A variety of personality types can share a tendency. As I have mentioned previously on my blog, I am a Questioner. According to Rubin, “Questioners question all expectations; they meet an expectation only if they believe its justified, so in effect they respond only to inner expectations” (6). Finding out my tendency has been helpful to me. It has helped me understand why I am unable at times to complete a task or make a decision, or it explains my resistance to meeting someone else’s requests. My life feels like a whirlwind at the moment. Unlike a season of sacrifice, it is challenging in a way that is both energizing and exciting. I love learning, and I’m beginning to love getting myself out of my comfort zone and seeing how far I can push myself creatively. At times, it feels exhilarating, and other times it feels terrifying. The one constant, though, is the support and encouragement that I receive from you, dear reader, along with my awesome friends and family. Happiness!

I have officially completed the clean eating portion of The Clean 20 program. I lost a total of seven pounds in the 20 days. Was I perfect? No, of course not. Nonetheless, I am extremely proud of the accomplishments that I have made during the last 20 days. My biggest accomplishment which has given me the biggest payoff is quitting added sugar. Except for the small slice of chocolate cake that I had at my mother-in-law’s house a couple of weeks ago, I have not eaten anything sweet. No candy, no cupcakes, no Happy Tracks ice cream, no cookie cake. These were all offered to me during the program, and I turned them all down. No sweets coupled with eliminating soda or eating products with a high sugar content (ketchup, BBQ sauce, juice, etc.) has made a huge difference. I can think more clearly, my joints feel better, and I don’t feel as tired throughout the day. The other accomplishment worth mentioning is my increase in eating more natural foods, especially vegetables. I’ve never had a problem eating fresh fruit on a daily basis, but eating fresh vegetables daily is another story. Now, I eat them every day.

Baked Salmon with sautéed spinach and mushrooms

One of my favorite meals is baked salmon with sautéed spinach and mushrooms. It is very easy to make. I spray a baking dish with olive oil cooking spray. Then I place a piece of salmon in the dish, top it with a pat of butter, and sprinkle it with Tony Chachere’s seasoning. I bake it at 400 degrees for about 25 minutes. While the fish is baking, I put some light olive oil in a pan with some minced garlic. I add fresh spinach and fresh mushrooms. I add some salt while it is cooking. That’s it! The meal is quick, easy, and tastes yummy.

During this last week, I did drink more water. Except for yesterday and today, I drank between 9 and 11 glasses per day. Drinking cold water seems to help me drink more of it. I also exercised more this week. I walked three days after work. Each day, I walked for an hour. According to the program, my total number of steps to reach was 86,000. I walked 59,855. I was also suppose to climb 27 flights of steps. I climbed a total of 29 flights of steps. My classroom is on the second floor, so meeting this goal is relatively easy. I had several other exercises to complete (jumping jacks, squats, planks, jog punches, ice skaters, high knees) throughout the week. I did NOT complete any of these exercises. There is only so much time in a day. And, with after-school meetings and play practice for two hours in the evening, as well as taking care of personal tasks at home, fitting everything in each day can be a challenge. It’s not perfect, but a good start in the right direction. In my opinion, anything is better than nothing.

So, what’s next? The next part of The Clean 20 program is the reemergence period which is also 20 days. This period of time is where you can reintroduce some of the foods that were eliminated during the 20 days of clean eating. However, it is definitely not adding back the sugar, soda, potato ships, fried foods, etc. that can be harmful to your body when consumed on a regular basis. Dr. Ian K. Smith recommends creating a list of banned foods and a list of reintroduced foods. He also recommends reintroducing foods slowly. My goal is to continue eating pretty much like I have been eating for the last three weeks. One item that I have missed while eating clean is Blue Plate mayonnaise, so I will probably sneak in a little here and there.

I must admit that yesterday I ate perfectly clean for breakfast and lunch, but for dinner, I did treat myself. My hubby and I stayed in New Orleans last night to attend a play. We ate dinner at Café at the Square in the Blake Hotel. I ordered the Shrimp and Grits Cake with a salad. It was happy hour, so I ordered a glass of red wine. My hubby and I also split an appetizer which was Mozzarella Croquettes. The meal was fantastic! Since I could not eat all of my entrée, and we did not finish the appetizer, we took it back to our room. We happily split the leftovers for breakfast this morning.

I’m feeling positive about my health and fitness goals, dear reader. Eating clean these last couple of weeks has gotten me closer to my goal of losing 19 pounds by the end of the year. It is doable. It is important to my health. And, it is necessary for me to live my best life. Happiness!

Sesame StreetGood morning! Today is a most terrific day. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, the air conditioner is running, and I got Sesame Street stamps from the post office yesterday.  Happiness boost! It is also the birthday of one of my dearest friends on the planet…the fabulous Michelle. How fitting that I bought Sesame Street stamps the day before the celebration of her birth! Sesame Street is one of the many popular shows that airs on PBS.

Michelle and I met at WYES-TV (PBS) many, many moons ago, and we have been friends ever since. I’m grateful that she is a part of my life. Happy Birthday, my friend!

I am immensely enjoying my SUMMER! This summer has been about learning, growing, healing, committing, recharging, and loving life. It is not lost on me that I am blessed to have this time off. Having this time to myself has allowed me to invest in myself and set goals for my future. I was diagnosed with tennis elbow in June. I’ve been able to go to occupational therapy twice a week to try and fix this issue. My big toe is completely healed from the fall I had last month. My acting goals are falling into place, and my singing is improving. I hired a handyman this week to paint the utility room and the office in my house. I’m in the process of purging each room and closet in our house of all the unnecessary stuff. For me, a cluttered house equals a cluttered mind. Without sounding too dramatic, it is holding me back from living my best life.

Since I will be hanging around the house this week while the rooms are being painted, I plan to get some scrapbooking done. I’m still working on Andrew’s Ireland trip. My summer break is slowly coming to an end, so I want to make the most of the last couple of weeks before I have to report back to school. What have you been up to this summer, dear reader? This year the summer solstice fell on Friday, June 21st. The summer solstice is the longest day of the year and the beginning of the summer season.  With that being said, Gretchen Rubin and her sister Liz Craft recommended the following “try this at home” on their most recent episode of Happier with Gretchen Rubin: Celebrate the summer (or winter) solstice by revisiting your one-word theme. My theme for this year is COMMIT. Since the year is almost half over, I thought, why not do a little self-reflection and see how I’m doing.

When I chose the word COMMIT, I thought it would light a fire that would ignite and spread throughout all the different areas of my life. Nah, that has not happened.  While I am not earning high marks in every area, I am earning gold stars in a few of them. I am slowly, but steadily, making strides in my house with purging/organizing the stuff that is in it. My hubby and I are making improvements (painting, making repairs, and buying a new bed). Now that I have a new scrapbook room, I am making the effort to carve out time to organize photos/mementos and to finally finish Andrew’s Ireland scrapbook by the end of the year. I have been taking classes to exercise my acting muscle and have signed up for private coaching sessions. And, I am reading at least one book per month on self-improvement.

Where am I falling short? Health and wellness. Self-care. I am not referring to avoiding the doctor or skipping annual exams. I am referring to the day-to-day self-care that could improve my life dramatically. I have not been able to commit to daily exercise or a healthy diet (eating clean). Why? Not sure. Since the beginning of the year, I have started and stopped a million times (hyperbole). Three items on my 19 for 2019 list are connected to this area in my life: #4 Lose 19 pounds.; #5 Go to the gym at least once per week.; and #6 Run a 5K. Meh! Unfortunately, I have not made any strides towards accomplishing those goals.

With regards to my 19 for 2019 list, I have accomplished one ongoing item.

#8 Read one book a month for self-improvement. This month I read The Actor’s Life: A Survival Guide by Jenna Fischer. Since I was taking auditioning classes with Lance Nichols this month, I thought it would be beneficial to read it. It was an excellent choice. Jenna Fischer is well-known for her role as Pam on The Office. She tells her story about the struggles of becoming an actor with honesty and humor while providing sound advice for beginning actors. How I wish this book had been written years ago when I first started this acting journey! Knowing myself though, I probably would have quit the minute I finished the book. HA! All kidding aside, I consider it a user-friendly reference guide for aspiring actors that I plan to utilize throughout my acting career (no matter how short-lived it may be).

Although I am not accomplishing everything I want or need to accomplish at this moment, I am not going to feel defeated or give up, dear readers. Life is too short, especially at 50 years old. With a bit more self-reflection, I hope to figure out what is obstructing me from moving forward with my health and wellness goals, so I can eliminate it. Alas, dear reader, the 5th month of the year is in the bag. I’m looking forward to the next two months of the summer. I have scheduled a few routine doctors’ appointments. June promises to be engaging with an acting workshop on the first four Saturdays of the month, a local play, a concert in NOLA, and my annual scrapbook convention. In between all the social activities, I plan to spend time with friends and family, exercise, read, and knock out some of the items on my 19 for 2019 list. I’m blessed!

Speaking of my 19 for 2019 list, I have crossed off a couple of items.

#3 Get a colonoscopy. During spring break, I had my first colonoscopy. Four polyps were discovered, removed, and sent off for testing. My test results came back negative; however, my doctor wants me to get another colonoscopy in three years. Surprisingly, except for the SUPREP that I had to drink, the procedure was not bad at all. Next time, I will ask for a different prep because the SUPREP was disgusting, and I vomited the second dose. I strongly encourage everyone who turns 50 (unless you have family history that requires it earlier) to have this procedure done. My friend’s husband put it off until he was 59 and only did it because his father was recently diagnosed with colon cancer. His results came back cancerous and part of his colon had to be removed.

#14 Buy a new bed for master bedroom. Over the Memorial Day Weekend, Rooms To Go had a sale on beds, so my hubby and I took advantage of the sale and bought a new bed. Technically, we bought two beds. We purchased a Serta iComfort king with an adjustable base. However, with the recommendation of my BFF Shelly, we opted for each of us to have our own adjustable base to fit our own level of comfort. Therefore, our king bed is really two Twin X beds pushed together. And, no, neither one of us has fallen into the crack where the two beds meet. We still need to buy a headboard/footboard since our previous bed was a queen.

#8 Read one book a month for self-improvement. This month I read Off the Clock: Feel Less Busy While Getting More Done by Laura Vanderkam. As most of you know, I struggle with time management; therefore, any chance I get to pick up some good advice on this topic, I’m game. Vanderkam is all about tracking time Off the Clockwhich is extremely beneficial when you want to see how you are REALLY spending your time. We all (myself included) like to say we are busy; however, that is a story we like to tell even to ourselves. I found her “three versions of the self” interesting. She describes each version: “The anticipating self is wondering about, planning, and worrying about the future. The experiencing self is in the here and now. The remembering self thinks back to the past” (Vanderkam, 70). The anticipating self sets our intentions or goals while the remembering self reflects on the fruits of our labor. Our experiencing self follows through or falls through with plans, intentions, or goals depending on the circumstances or feelings in the present moment. My experiencing self gets in my way of taking action on a regular basis. It is pals with FEAR and PROCRASTINATION which has robbed me from realizing a few goals or pursuing a couple of dreams. This is my year to COMMIT, so in order to take more action and waste less time, I need to commit to listening less to my experiencing self, plan the task/event, and execute.

I have always loved the idea of a clean slate; the end of one month and the first day of the next month make me giddy with anticipation. I have many wonderful events planned in June, so I hope my experiencing self is up for some enjoyment and cuts ties with fear and procrastination. In addition, I need to commit to saying “I’m busy” or “I’m tired” less which will make my remembering self happier. Happiness!

Scrapbook Room

Thankfully, Andrew has successfully graduated from STA. School is officially out for the summer. And, I have happily moved into my new scrapbook room. Yee-haw! This means that I can cross off #11 (Clear out front bedroom and make it my scrapbook room.) on my 19 for 2019 list. I must thank my hubby who painted my room; my hubby and Daddy who installed the crown moulding; and my BFF Shelly who helped me decide on where everything should go and helped me hang Andrew’s art on the walls. I now have sufficient space for me to scrapbook on a regular basis AND for my friends to scrapbook with me. Happiness!

50 cookieSince my last post, I have officially turned 50 years of age. My fantastic friends at school started my birthday celebration off with balloons, flowers, lunch, cards, and sweet treats. The next day was the shindig with family and friends from near and far. Son #1’s talented friend Tyler made delicious homemade pizzas for everyone in attendance. My BFF Shelly baked an amazingly scrumptious cake with a bra on top of it. And, my gifted cookie maker friend Darleen made incredibly yummy cookies for me to hand out to my guests. What a delight to celebrate ME surrounded by some of the most awesome people in the world! Although my birthday month will soon be over, my year of 50 has just begun.

That said, what have I accomplished so far in this new year besides celebrating my 50th birthday?

  • I organized the bookcases in my living room.  I will need to eventually get more bookcases. For me, there is no such animal as having too many books. I LOVE books! In addition to organizing the bookcases, my hubby repainted Andrew’s bathroom which is also the bathroom our guests use. We also bought new bathroom accessories. This is one of many rooms that need to be repainted this year.
  • #8 on my 19 for 2019 is to read one book a month for self-improvement. For January, I chose Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand in the Sun and Be Your Own Person by Shonda Rhimes. I chose to read this book first because it goes along with my theme for the year: COMMIT. Many of the ideas that Rhimes said YES to are goals that I have committed to completing throughout 2019. I definitely enjoyed this book. It spoke to me. I also enjoyed listening to the podcast episode (12/26/18: Year of Yes) of By the Book where Jolenta Greenberg and Kristen Meinzer live by the rules of a self-help book and discuss the pros and cons of it, as well as if the book is life changing. They both agreed that the book helped them in various areas of their lives by saying yes to things that they would normally want to brush aside. I still need to listen to the follow-up episode (Epilogue: Year of Yes) that aired on 01/02/18. This episode features listener comments and questions about their experiences living by the Year of Yes.
  • I had Monday off in celebration of MLK; therefore, I took the opportunity to get a massage which was #1 on my 19 for 2019 list. It was a Christmas gift from my 8th grade homeroom from last year. I love massages; however, I am terrible about scheduling them even when I receive one as a gift. I figured if I put it on my list, I would go get it. The result was WONDERFUL and RELAXING.

Happy New Year, dear readers! 2019 is a brand new year, and I hope you are off to a terrific start. My year was running smoothly until this morning when I drove over a curb at Southeastern University and damaged two of my tires. Thankfully, I was not too far from the Hyundai dealership where the service technician replaced both tires with new ones and got me back on track. It was an expensive lesson learned about being fully present and paying better attention.

And, that experience segues nicely to the word that I have chosen for my theme this year. COMMIT. In 2019, I want to commit to improving my health, wealth, home, and overall well-being (like being more present). Since I successfully completed the majority of the items on my 18 for 2018 list, I decided to make a 19 for 2019 list. Is it more ambitious than last year’s list? Yes, indeed! Will it increase my happiness? Definitely!

Other Plans for 2019:

  1. On Goodreads I joined the 2019 Reading Challenge, and my goal is to read 50 books again this year. I barely met my goal of 50 books in 2018, so increasing my goal did not seem like a good idea.
  2. Andrew and I will be attending Comic Con in New Orleans this weekend. I’ll be checking out The Walking Dead actors.
  3. Andrew and I will be attending Fleetwood Mac’s farewell tour in February. I’m super excited that they included New Orleans on their tour schedule.
  4. I will be attending my annual scrapbooking convention with my gal pals June 20th-June 23rd.
