So, after perusing my time logs for the last three weeks that I tracked my time (01/22, 01/29, 02/05), I made three observations.small clock

Observation #1: My work weeks are not created equal. And, neither is my personal time.

Week 3: School – Due to the two ice days the previous week, Monday changed from a professional development day with no students to a regular day of school. Tom from Kagan came to observe my teaching structure on Tuesday. I had a school-related meeting after school on both Monday and Wednesday.

Week 3: Personal – I took the day off of work on Tuesday to accompany Son #1 to the VA Hospital in New Orleans which lasted until about 11:15, so I was home before 12:30. This allowed me to complete some personal tasks and errands before picking Andrew up from school. Except for Wednesday afternoon, I picked Andrew up from either school or tennis practice every afternoon this week. Son #1 picked Andrew up for me on Wednesday afternoon because of my meeting, and the three of us met at La Caretta for dinner.  Grocery shopping on Friday evening.

Week 4: School – This was Catholic Schools Week. Mass schedule (shorter classes) on both Monday (CSW Mass) and Tuesday (CSW Faculty Breakfast). Open House on Tuesday evening. Andrew got a ride home on Tuesday afternoon, so I stayed at school to work before Open House.

Week 4: Personal – I had a doctor’s appointment on Monday which led to picking up a prescription in Mandeville that was followed by a 6:00pm meeting with Andrew at STA. Wednesday was another doctor’s appointment for me that was followed by me picking Andrew up from tennis practice. On Thursday, my mother-in-law was checked into the hospital, so Andrew and I visited with her after school. On Friday, Andrew had tennis practice, then a dermatology  appointment.  Grocery shopping on Friday evening.

Week 5: School – ACT Aspire administered on Monday and Tuesday which meant shorter class periods. NJHS meeting after school on Monday and a staff development meeting on Wednesday afternoon (missed because of my doctor’s appointment).

Week 5: Personal – Since I bought a new car, Andrew was able to start driving himself to school and tennis practice. Tuesday was the only day I had to drive him to and from school. I had another doctor’s appointment on Wednesday afternoon. Grocery shopping on Friday evening.

Lesson #1: Planning is the key to not losing my mind both professionally and personally. Thankfully, I am a planner by nature. The stress comes in when juggling too many commitments on one day. Hopefully, buying the new car will lessen my load personally since Andrew can get to his practices and appointments on his own. In addition to planning, acceptance is needed with my school schedule. I have no control over the schedule; however, I have control over my content.

Observation #2: Despite working seven days a week on schoolwork during Weeks 3 and 4 and five days during Week 5, I worked less than 50 hours each week (Week 3 – 41hrs 42 min; Week 4 – 49 hours 13 min; Week 5 – 43 hours 27 min). Lesson #2: Based on my time logs, having school-related meetings, leaving after school to either pick Andrew up from school/tennis practice, or having to go to a doctor’s appointment seems to determine how much schoolwork gets done after the bell rings at the end of the day. Also, I’m pretty much done once the sun goes down. I feel like I work all the time, and I attribute this to working on the weekends. Of course, I only have 35 students this year and more time off during the school day. This cuts down significantly on the amount of time spent on grading papers. Since Andrew can now drive, I think I will be able to work more after school and less on the weekends. Fingers crossed!

Observation #3: Interruptions are apparently a norm in both my professional and personal life. Intellectually, I was aware of the interruptions; however, until I studied my time logs, I had no idea how many there were and how they impacted my day both at work and at home. Weather, illness (developed another abscess and MIL had a mini-stroke ), my children, husband, co-workers, students, friends, acquaintances, procrastination, the phone, and the list goes on and on. Lesson #3: While interruptions can slow you down and sometimes hinder progress, they are also good reminders to take care of yourself, socialize with the people you love, and recharge. Interruptions are part of life. You can either be amenable or frustrated. Depending on what is going on in my life, I experience both feelings. For me, planning helps alleviate some of the stress attached to interruptions. Of course, interruptions probably contribute to me having to complete schoolwork on the weekends.

So, there you have it, dear reader. I gleaned a plethora of information about myself just from keeping track of my time. Since I was on vacation, I took this past week off from tracking my time; however, I will start tracking it again tomorrow. I’m interested to see what these next three weeks will reveal about how I am spending my time, especially with Andrew driving his own vehicle. And, I’m curious to learn how the time change will affect how I spend my time in the coming months.

Have an absolutely delightful week working on whatever it is that makes you happy. Remember to remain positive even in the midst of interruptions. Happiness!

“The great thing, if one can, is to stop regarding all the unpleasant things as interruptions of one’s ‘own,’ or ‘real’ life. The truth is of course that what one calls the interruptions are precisely one’s real life — the life God is sending one day by day.” ~ C.S. Lewis, The Collected Works of C.S. Lewis

Kat & Michelle

#oldfriendsarethebestfriends

Over the Mardi Gras break while visiting with my fabulous friend Michelle, I finally figured out Instagram. With her guidance, I was able to create my Instagram account, gain a few followers, and even become a follower myself. Although I am still learning the ropes, it is a fairly easy social media platform to navigate, and it’s a cool way to express yourself. Pictures make me happy!

In other news, I weighed myself at the beginning of the week. As of 12 February 2018, I weighed in at 154 pounds. Daylight Saving Time is about 21 days away. This means more daylight which means my running shoes will be hitting the asphalt very soon. This also means that I will begin working on shedding the 18 pounds I want to lose this year. Therefore, the next three weeks leading up to the time change is preparation time for getting serious about exercising more regularly and eating clean. My preparation includes rereading Jackie Warner’s This is Why You’re Fat (And How to Get Thin Forever) and taking a couple of action steps to be ready for the big day.

Week 1: Drink more water. Read Part 1: “This is Why You’re Fat”

Week 2: Start food journal. Read Part 2: “This is How You Eat to Get Hot and Healthy”

Week 3: Create exercise schedule. Read Part 3: “This is How You Exercise to Get Hot and Healthy”

11 March 2018: Reweigh myself. Put 18 marbles in the Pounds To Go container. Read Part 4: “This is How You Stay Hot and Healthy”

I’ll have nine months to achieve my goal. No more excuses. I’m tired of being tired and unhealthy.

For being off of work for a week, I have been quite busy. Thank goodness I had the week off to accomplish everything! I have more to share with you, dear reader; however, it will have to wait for another time. I still owe you a post on my last two weeks of time tracking. I thought for sure I would have more time to write this week, but alas, that was not the case. All in good time. Happiness!

My happiness project this year is to simply complete 18 objectives throughout 2018. I’ll keep you posted as I cross them off my list. Here is my 18 for 2018 list:

  1. Order two birth certificates for myself (contact vital records in California).
  2. Figure out Instagram.
  3. Create a Google Photo account.
  4. Lose 18 pounds.
  5. Blog at least once per month (of course, more would be better).
  6. Plan a trip to New York City with Andrew for 2019.
  7. Interact with a sloth.
  8. Buy Andrew a reasonably priced and reliable used car.
  9. Visit a museum.
  10. Try a voice (singing) lesson.
  11. Update my LinkedIn account.
  12. Organize my master bedroom closet.
  13. Make an appointment with my eye doctor.
  14. Watch Stranger Things.
  15. Complete a 5K.
  16. Read Side Hustle: From Idea to Income in 27 Days by Chris Guillebeau.
  17. Keep track of my time.
  18. Plan my 50th birthday celebration.

Other Plans for 2018:

  1. On Goodreads I joined the Reading Challenge, and my goal is to read 50 books. I surpassed my goal of 50 books in 2017 by reading 55 books.
  2. Andrew and I will be attending Comic Con in New Orleans this weekend, so he can meet Stan Lee.
  3. I will be attending my annual scrapbooking convention with my gal pals May 31st-June 3rd.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Fleetwood Mac will come to New Orleans this year for their farewell tour. Seeing them perform again would be awesome and a giant boost to my happiness. So, dear reader…how about you? Have you made resolutions or have goals you would like to complete in 2018? If so, please share. Happiness!

flowerIt is the first day of Spring, dear reader. What an absolutely gorgeous day! I wish I could have spent the day outside in a hammock reading a book; however, I do not own a hammock, and I spent a good portion of the day working on school stuff. I did sneak a couple of chapters of a zombie book in between reading journals and creating a quiz.

In four days, I will be on spring break along with my family. I cannot wait to have some time away from work. I will try my very best to get everything completed for school by Thursday, so I can have some FUN.

I want to invite you to go on a meditation journey with me for the next 21 days. Oprah is one of my favorite people. She is connected to some of the most inspiring spiritual teachers of today. She is partnering with Deepak Chopra to present a 21-Day Meditation Experience called Shedding the Weight: Mind, Body, and Spirit. It starts tomorrow, March 21st. You can register now at http://www.oprah.com/meditation and it is FREE. I have already registered! Once you register, you will receive an email to confirm your registration. Then you will receive a daily email with the link for that day’s meditation. This will be my first meditation experience; however, I can definitely shed some weight in all three areas, and I cannot think of two better people to lead this inspiring encounter. Let me know if you plan to join the meditation experience.

Well, dear reader, it is time for me to bid you adieu. It is Sunday night and The Walking Dead is just around the corner. Have a productive and amazing week. Happiness!

I woke up this morning feeling grumpy. The grumpiness was clearly in response to the disappointment I was feeling with myself. I feel stalled in Mission Innovation. Instead of grading an assignment for school, I decided to procrastinate. I worked a good bit on school stuff yesterday and resented the fact that I would have to do it again today. With a cup of coffee in hand, my I-Pad, and a notebook, I took to the front porch to listen to the second session of Danielle LaPorte’s Fire Starter Sessions audio course that I signed up for last month. Tomorrow is the last day of the course, and out of sixteen sessions, I was just listening to the second one. Ironically, in this session, LaPorte talked about embracing easy (quality easy) and addressed procrastination as being easy and that it can be divine. Alleluia! My mood brightened somewhat.

After the session, I went inside to have breakfast and read a reflection a coworker sent out this morning. It began, “TRUST AND THANKFULNESS WILL get you safely through this day. Trust protects you from worrying and obsessing. Thankfulness keeps you from criticizing and complaining” (Sarah Young, Jesus Calling). Wow! I decided that instead of starting any school work, I would look at the emails I received all week pertaining to the two Blogging University courses I signed up for last month and have NOT had the time to really participate in. I have been storing the information with the hope that I will be able to do more with them in the next few months. I started reconstructing the ABOUT area of my blog which was one of the topics this week. Then, well, yeah…I did not start working on school stuff. I surfed the web, played some games, and procrastinated some more. I chose “inner rhythms over external pressures” (Danielle LaPorte). Magazine StashI finally dusted in my bedroom, cleaned off surfaces, threw away Andrew’s binder that had been residing under my nightstand for the last two years, and made a plan to sort through the scrapbooking magazines my BFF gave me years ago. I felt like I was on an archaeological dig to find my bedroom. And, I had fun and my grumpiness faded completely away.

Despite the fact that I do not feel that I am making much progress with my audio course or my blogging courses, I am still getting something out of both opportunities. My disappointment comes from having expectations. I need to trust and be thankful. On the other hand, my procrastination paid off today. I have two new goals to complete in the next few weeks: update the ABOUT section of my blog and go through the scrapbooking magazines (59 total). While I did not do any school work, I did make my to-do list for the week.

The weekend is over, dear readers. May you all have a fantastic week. Happiness!

The four months of the year that I struggle with the most are the months without Daylight Savings time. I have a hard time dealing with it getting dark early, especially when it is cold. Admittedly, I am not as productive or motivated to be as productive as I am the other eight months of the year. I want to crawl into a cave and hibernate. However, I do have eight things that are saving my life right now.

1. The Book of Awakening by Mark Nepo

Book of Awakening

2. My Gratitude Journal

I look forward to recording the blessings I receive each and every day. This daily practice has really changed my perspective in all areas of my life.

3. The X-Files/The Walking Dead

Thexfiles

I enjoy watching television. While The Walking Dead is on hiatus, I have been watching the revival of my favorite program The X-Files. I actually look forward to Mondays. So far, the episodes have been terrifically entertaining. The Walking Dead and Talking Dead return next Sunday (Valentine’s Day). I look forward to seeing my characters again.

4. My Keurig Brewer

There is nothing better than having a cup of coffee, cocoa, or tea while reading, writing, or grading papers.

5. Books (and Books-a-Million)

I do not think I could live without my books. There are many things I could do without in my life; however, books are NOT one of them. And, regular trips to Books-a-Million with Andrew definitely make me happy.

6. Tooty (aka Comet)

IMG_2795

My little black ragamuffin brings much joy to my life. He is quite a character who demands lots of love and affection which he equally doles out to his humans provided adequate treats are in hand.

7. Family

I LOVE MY FAMILY!

8. Words with Friends/Trivia Crack

I know, I know. I should not admit that I enjoy playing these games, but I DO. I am a word geek. And trivia, well, I just like answering trivia questions especially related to arts and entertainment.

There you have it, dear readers! I know that my list is small; however, I am grateful for these eight things that are helping me survive right now. Happiness!

What is saving your life right now?

The sights and sounds of the waking day are incredible. 16196-illustration-of-a-hot-cup-of-coffee-pv[1]On my front porch relaxing in a rocking chair, I embraced the new day by watching the sun peeking through the trees while squirrels scampered across the lawn and birds hopped about looking for breakfast; listening to the chattering of the birds; smelling the fresh air; feeling the coolness of the morning air, and tasting the smooth richness of coffee. All five of my senses were fully engaged at that moment in full communion with the new day. Bliss! At that moment, fully PRESENT, I felt bliss. And, a sense of gratitude washed over me for the opportunity to appreciate the stillness, the beauty, and the absence of time. No place to be right away or a strict schedule to follow is my idea of the perfect way to start a new day.

Generally, my day begins in the darkness of early morning with no interaction with the outside world until Andrew and I make our daily drive to school. The natural world is not the focus (unless it is raining) in the car; it is each other. We are no longer at the same school; therefore, we talk the entire time we are in the car while listening to music. Upbeat, alternative music like the Violent Femmes, The Cure, or Twenty-One Pilots. In a different context, our morning drive is a perfect way to start a new day. It sets the tone for what each of us will face for the next few hours. Therefore, the mornings where I can linger and greet the sunrise are appreciated differently and are not taken for granted because they are a rare treat. Mornings like today are a reminder to slow down, admire nature’s beauty, and practice self-care.

It is amazing that today is the last day of January. It is also my younger sister’s 44th birthday. Happy Birthday, Rachel! January has provided me with a terrific start towards the changes I want to make this year. February offers me some exciting opportunities, as well as an entire week off from my day job. I registered for Danielle LaPorte’s free Fire Starter Sessions Audio Course and joined the Fire Starters Sessions group on Facebook. I had purchased the book back in the spring of 2012; however, I was not ready for the message. If all this course provides me with is the inspiration to pick up the momentum, it will be worth the time. I also registered for two Blogging University courses through WordPress: Writing 201: Finding Your Story (February 1-26) and Blogging 101: Zero to Hero (February 8-26). If it gets me writing daily, it will be worth the time.

What are your plans for February, dearest reader? Hopefully, it will include opportunities for self-care and a little fun. Until we meet again, embrace your day with an open heart. Happiness!

Well, I must say there will be NO blogging outside today. IMG_0368It is FREEZING this morning! Instead, I am sitting comfortably with Tooty (aka Comet, my dog) near the fireplace enjoying a warm fire courtesy of my hubby. Merci, beaucoup!

Gratitude! This simple, yet powerful word, is one of the keys that will help me find “inner peace and harmony” this year. Since the beginning of the year, two simple practices each day have already helped me make an attitude adjustment: reading Mark Nepo’s The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want by Being Present to the Life You Have every morning and writing in my gratitude journal every evening. They are the bookends of my day. Even in the midst of trials and tribulations, we can always find something to be grateful for in our lives. Sometimes, it is the trial or tribulation.

Nepo’s book is allowing me to examine my thoughts and feelings more closely. It sets the tone of my day. Sometimes, the passage seems like it was written specifically for me while other days it is simply a dose of inspiration. I am no longer dragging myself out of bed thinking about how tired I am and calculating how many hours until I sleep again. Each new day is full of possibilities, opportunities, and…yes challenges. I am blessed to have that new day and can share it with some amazing people. I might also have to share it with some annoying people, as well; however, the beauty of interacting with the annoying people is that it makes you appreciate the amazing people in your life that much more. There is always a silver lining, folks!

My gratitude journal is allowing me to complain less about the annoying people (kidding) and focus less on the negative interpretation of the day. It is all about perception and attitude. I, you, we…all have a choice about how we approach a situation. This does not mean we can never be unhappy, angry, or disappointed. We have to acknowledge those feelings, but not dwell on them to the point that our lives become a miserable cycle of negativity. My gratitude journal for any given day may include being grateful for a hot shower or that aggravating student in 6th period. I know that not everyone on this planet can enjoy a hot shower. I do not want to take that gift for granted. And, that aggravating student makes me appreciate my own children more.

Clearly, there will be days that we classify in the “stink” category. Embrace them for what they are, build a bridge, get over it, and wait for the blessing. Negativity will block the blessing from appearing; however, gratitude will allow it to appear. Enjoy this freezing cold day, dear readers, and be grateful that at least the sun is shining! Happiness!

IMG_0600What an absolutely gorgeous day! The sun is out, the temperature is cool, and the air is crisp. I took my little dog out to do his business before starting my business of writing and soon found myself sitting on my front porch basking in the sunshine and watching the birds and squirrels. I closed my eyes, listened, and felt peace. It only lasted a few minutes. However, it inspired me to write outside today. Thus, I am now writing this post outside on the deck in the backyard while enjoying a cup of hot green tea with honey. It is cooler than I expected since I am more in the shade than in the sun; however, it feels wonderful, and I am PRESENT. Nature has that effect.

Linger more. This was my challenge action this week for The Busy Boycott. While I wish I could report that I lingered more throughout the week, I pretty much saved it for today. I woke up at 7:00 this morning, made a quick trip to the bathroom, and climbed right back into bed where I snuggled some more under the blankets until 8:00. Feeling like I loitered long enough, I got up and wandered into the kitchen to make a cup of coffee and check my cell phone for any messages. I had an email from mon frere (Simon), so I replied, hit send, and brought my coffee along with my I-Pad back to the bedroom. Plopping back into bed, I caught up on reading a few blog posts, as well as my devotion for the day. Therefore, I lingered over my cup of coffee and took my time reading. Now I am up and ready to live the day.

Since the new year has started, Sundays have become a retreat of self-care. It seems as if each Saturday of January has entailed some type of activity outside the home. Friday afternoons before dinner have become the designated grocery shopping day which allows for Sunday to be sacred. I still have chores to do, the checkbook to balance, and clothes to wash; however, I have allowed myself to linger over that cup of coffee or actually read a blog post instead of skimming through it for the highlights. Having a day to just BE at home with nowhere to go has been pure delight. No one should have to wait for a vacation to practice self-care, savor a cup of coffee, or admire the beauty of nature on a day like today.

I know it does not appear on the surface that I have been doing much to change; however, the changes are happening, just slowly. Cutting back on my school hours, allowing myself a day to practice self-care, writing more, evaluating the “busyness” of my life are just a few ways I am laying the foundation to achieve my goals for this year. I’m opting to be the tortoise instead of the hare.

Throughout the next week, I will be thinking about my perfect day. This exercise was mentioned during the Smart Cookies webinar I participated in last week and as a reflection question for The Busy Boycott. This exercise is meant to help inspire you to work on goals that will help you attain what really matters to you for your life. I’ll share my perfect day with you when I get it figured out. In the meantime, enjoy your day. Try to get outside today if the day is beautiful and soak up not only the sun, but also the sights and sounds of nature. Happiness!

Kat @ 47

Happy Birthday to ME! Today, 47 years ago, I arrived on the planet. Even though I had to work today, I had a wonderful birthday. I received emails, texts, Facebook messages, birthday cards in the mail, phone calls, as well as hugs, kisses, and well wishes. My sister and her family even sang “Happy Birthday” to me over the phone. All day I have felt the love, and I am extremely grateful. I have some amazing family, friends, co-workers, and students.

Andrew and I took a celebratory picture early this morning; hence, the half-opened eyes. I opted for Raising Cane’s for dinner. Simple! All I plan on doing for the rest of the evening is READ! I desperately want to finish Duma Key by Stephen King. I only have forty pages left. Therefore, dear readers, I bid thee a good-night! Happiness!
