Side HustleIn January of 2017, I started listening to Chris Guillebeau’s podcast Side Hustle School. Chris Guillebeau enjoys the freedom that comes with being self-employed and a side hustler. He has written a few books on the subject over the years about his experiences and the experiences of others who prefer to make a living in a nontraditional way. Being my own boss and having more control over my time appeals to me; therefore, when his book was published last year, I decided to read it and see if I could obtain some information that would move me closer to developing my own side hustle.

This morning, I finished reading Chris Guillebeau’s book Side Hustle: From Idea to Income in 27 Days. Motivation for starting a side hustle varies from person to person; however, the goal is pretty much the same: create additional income while still working your day job. Sometimes, the side hustle turns into your day job. Sometimes, the side hustle doesn’t work out long term or fizzles out altogether. Regardless of the motivation or the outcome, starting a side hustle does not require much time, money, or leaving the security of your day job. A side hustle is also not a part-time job where you work for someone else. Guillebeau offers a step-by-step format, provides resources, and shares stories to guide the reader to creating his or her own side hustle.

I have friends, who over the years, have created their own side hustles. They have generated extra income from making hair bows, taking pictures, tutoring, giving music lessons, and baking cookies. They all have a certain skill or special talent that they enjoy doing and profit from by putting those skills and talents out into the world. Now it is my turn. I just have to come up with an idea.

I completed my first full week of the new school year and with it came a couple of surprises. The first surprise was the speed at which the work day passes in my new position. I am busy from the moment I set down my purse in the morning until I pick it back up again in the afternoon. Except for Thursday, I even worked while eating lunch. I attended meetings, reviewed lesson plans, visited classrooms to check environment, instructed teachers on programs new to them, answered loads of questions, and dealt with NJHS business. Several people have asked if I like my new position, and the answer is “yes, so far.” It is considerably different from teaching in the classroom.

The second surprise was on Thursday. I had an upper GI endoscopy procedure done. It had been almost six years since my last one. The main reason for repeating the scope was a result of certain foods appearing to feel stuck (roast, salad, bread) in my esophagus. Unfortunately, some scar tissue had developed in my esophagus due to reflux symptoms. To remedy this, my gastroenterologist dilated and stretched my esophagus. The surprise was being informed by my doctor that my stomach contained multiple gastric polyps. YIKES! I had no idea that polyps could form in your stomach. Biopsies of the three largest ones were taken and in two weeks, I should have results. What can cause these polyps? One cause is using proton-pump inhibitor medicines which I use to control my acid reflux. YIKES! And, my doctor just upped my meds from 20mg to 40mg. While this news is depressing, it is also a wake-up call. No more playing for me. I MUST take my health and wellness more seriously because I am currently overweight. Being overweight and eating poorly are risk factors for acid reflux.

RosesThe third surprise was on Friday after school. My hubby bought me beautiful roses to celebrate my first full week in my new position. They were waiting for me when I arrived home from work. It definitely made me happy.  What a thoughtful and loving gesture!

Finally, my last surprise was at weigh-in this morning. I lost two pounds! It was probably a result of my doctor removing the three polyps. HA! All kidding aside, I am trying to make a more conscious effort of not mindlessly snacking, especially when feeling overwhelmed. I am lessening my sugar intake, but it is imperative that I make more healthy changes in my diet. I need to return to clean eating and drink lots of water. I continue to walk almost daily. However, I need to also include some strength training and cross training as part of my fitness plan. I will be thrilled when I can say I have a walk/run streak. Clearly, I am not there, yet. It is essential for me to take action right now.

I remain hopeful, dear reader. Prioritizing my time is going to be the key to getting me back on track. I did it once before and lost 26 pounds which allowed me to cut back on my acid reflux meds. I failed at taking care of myself, and this is the consequences. There is a silver lining. I can start over again and strive to be better. Happiness!

ClockI struggle with time management and hope 2018 will be the year I can tame the beast. Therefore, I decided to sign up for Laura Vanderkam’s  168 Hours Time Tracking Challenge which begins tomorrow, 08 January. Time tracking is #17 on my list of 18 for 2018. Vanderkam’s challenge is only for one week; however, I am planning to track for a few weeks to get a truer picture of how I spend my time.

Tomorrow will be my first day back at work and Andrew’s first day back at school. He has been off of school since 15 December, and I have been off of work since 21 December. Except for spending a few hours in my classroom during the holidays working on my classroom library, so Andrew and Claire could earn service hours, neither one of us have done any school work since we got out. For once in my teaching career, I took completely off during Christmas break. Honestly, I needed the brain break.

This first week back will be an unusual week for me because most of my 8th graders will be in Washington, D.C., and I will be chaperoning the Hammond trip for the 8th graders who stayed home. Consequently, my work schedule will not be typical. That is fine because I’m tracking all my time which includes my personal time. I feel like I spend too much time working; therefore, the main objective for tracking my time is to figure out how to carve out more personal time to achieve my goals for the future.

Aaaah…. another successful Auction at WYES-TV in NOLA. I spent the last two weekends working as a director on the Art Auction. Happiness! WYES-TV is one of my favorite places to work. My connection with the public television station developed in 1991. I took a class at the University of New Orleans called UNO Video. Through this class, I did volunteer work at the station to gain valuable television experience. I started out as a floor director for Membership Drives and the two annual Auctions (Showboat & Art). Later, I learned floor producing, and directing. Eventually, I became a staff member (Associate Producer). Out of all the jobs I have worked, it is the job I like the most. Not just for the work, but also for the people. You know who you are….M & M! WYES is like a second family. And, I’m fortunate to be able to freelance there twice a year, and sometimes more if the work is available. I’m already looking forward to my next project.
